Tremulous Oak Sanctuary perches on top of a hill dotted with—big surprise—oak trees. They even quiver as the wind gusts through their branches. As we pull up to the gate house, I jump out of the car, leaving Kate to wrap up her conversation with the driver. Or not. It would be perfectly fine, preferable actually, if she stayed to chat while I investigated.

“Where’re you going?” The ends of Kate’s scarf, the same deep green as the needles on the surrounding trees, flutter as she jogs to catch up to me.
I shrug, but the forest has captured my senses. The carpet of wood sorrel, the sounds of birds and a creek somewhere, the way my feet squelch on the wet ground, and the petrichor smell all pull at me. It’s almost enough to make me relax around my might-be-a-murderer-sister. I pause, hands on hips. “Go ahead. Lead the way.”
She stands there for a moment. “Actually, you’re going down the right path.”
I roll my eyes, and we continue on, falling into a comfortable pace. Kate’s umbrella swings by her side, a habit that she’s had since childhood. It reminds me of the first time she ran away.

After speaking those words, he sprang forward and shoved her away from the shadows. Pain rocked him as soon as he touched her. The scorching mystical agony tore a scream out of him, but it kept her away from the unearthly menace, and the shock did what he intended.

No, no, no. I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing for a hand on my arm. An expression full of pity. Instructions to breathe more deeply. Shallow assurances that everything is fine. That I just need to sleep better. Eat better. Exercise. Lose weight. Go outside. Get a social life. Be better.

None of that happens. The water runs and then the electric kettle starts burbling. Cupboard doors clatter.

“Farthest right,” I say between breaths. They’re coming slower now.
Little puffs of sugar and cocoa fill the air as Stacy scoops hot chocolate powder into three mugs. She uncorks an elixir and adds a generous tablespoon to each cup. After a vigorous three seconds of stirring for each, she grabs the handles and turns to me. “You good?”

I lurk in one of my usual shadows, the one cast by the street lamp on the corner of Fern Way and a looming hazelnut tree. From this angle, I have a clear view into Maisie Fletcher’s living room. The woman often talks about making curtains for the narrow window on this side of the house, but she won’t. Like so many other humans, she’s fallen into the inexplicable trap of procrastination.
