“Face for the algorithm” on Instagram is a lie. Zuckerberg is collecting faces. He’s running The Facebook old school on MAMP Pro, locally on his laptop. AIR GAPPED. He’s stone cold rating you hot or not. He downloads your face onto a Zip disk. BEWARE.

When we made A Touch of Cloth, the stars both worried it meant their careers as TV detectives were over. Surely nobody would hire them to do it seriously. They reckoned without the need for television to keep making that same show again and again almost to the exclusion of everything else. S’fine.

The BBC has never managed to steer out of the conceptual tailspin of the iPlayer turning up as a (worldbeating groundbreaking) catch-up service for linear broadcasting, just as streaming was introduced. Catch-up and streaming are totally different. But they look the same to the public.

There’s more and more BBC radio stuff that you can’t listen back to internationally and I must say, I don’t love it. I’m, of course, as a non-resident Brit, not going to (indeed can’t) pay a TV licence, but being able to get the radio has always been a lifeline for native Brits living abroad.

Last week, I went to the theatre. Stood up to let a late middle aged couple into their seats next to us. Earwigged them as they sat down. “Hmm. Quite an angle.” “AI says it’s not a bad view.” “Ah! Good!” They were sitting in the ACTUAL seats. But they were trusting AI more than their own eyes.

If someone was aggressive and unpleasant to people they didn’t know / never met, but also really nice to their close friends, I’m not sure the second thing makes the first thing OK. It’s a bit of a low fucking bar, to be honest. It’s hardly worth celebrating. “Was nice to eight selected people.”

Hacks doing that lazy hate grift Is upsetting, but I sometimes think “Well, it’s a rough old industry at the moment. And it puts food on the table.” And then one of them dies, and all that food, earned with poison seems utterly wasted, and you’re just left with the ugly stain they’ve left behind.

The more times my bag is half arsedly searched as a piece of security theatre on the way into perfectly normal places, the more I want to carry a toy gun everywhere. I bet, as a middle aged white guy, I’d never get any trouble at all.

Very sad to hear of the death of Justin Hardy, film director and son of Wicker Man’s Robin Hardy, at only 61. Had a fantastically indiscreet curry with him in Newton Stewart at the premiere of the WM Final Cut. He was brilliantly entertaining, opinionated and hilariously sharp about filmmaking. RIP.

Justin Hardy at curry’s end, Newton Stewart, April 2023.
