A fun history of "soccer" versus "football." Also, it reports, "Wealthy students [in the late 1800s] had 'a habit of shortening words and adding "-er" to the end' to make slang terms. For example: breakfast becomes brekker, rugby became rugger." Does anyone still say "brekker" for breakfast?

I invited students (esp those who took English in the United States this year) to guest-blog for Separated by a Common Language. Elize Holyoake took up the invitation & wrote an ace post on why and where people say 'football' v 'soccer': separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/2026/07/foot...

Is there a Chrome extension that automatically selects "decline all cookies" or whatever minimum cookie selection is allowed by every website? I have to be the only one still manually clicking those boxes for every new website I visit, right?

Friends! Do you know a lot of PhD-holding nerds?? I'm surveying people who came from abroad to complete a PhD in the US, after the Trump admin announced student visas will only cover 4 years and folks must then seek uncertain renewal from USCIS. Please share! www.porchpartynews.com/p/trump-rule...

Were you an international student who got an American PhD? Take our survey!

A new Trump rule forces foreign doctoral candidates to apply mid-degree for an uncertain visa extension. What will that mean for academia and society—and people’s lives?

I got two fillings today, and I am grateful to live in the age of modern dental care. And I am even more grateful to live in the age of pharmaceuticals right now because, holy mother of god, that was a lot of pain. 😬

Sharing my best (US-based) money-saving tip again: Pirate Ship. I just mailed a big box of papers that would have been ~$19 if I had taken it to the post office. It was only $10.30 with Pirate Ship. I printed out the label at home and still dropped it off at the same post office. pirateship.com

I just got a call that my mother is in the ICU and probably won't make it through the day. She was fine yesterday, and I'm in shock. We just said goodbye on Facetime. Rushing to to the airport to try to see her in person again. Hug your loved ones.

I've never been opposed to the word "hallucinating" for describing how AI makes mistakes ... until now. Why now? I just talked to someone who thought AI hallucinations would be obvious because it would be obvious if you talked to a *person* who was hallucinating. 😱 2/2
