#Kelp anchors itself to rocky surfaces using a structure called a holdfast, seen here. This spaghetti-like network has one very important job: securing the kelp to the seafloor and holding it “fast” through all but the most turbulent conditions. 📸: @underwaterpat.bsky.social #oregon #kelpforest

'On top of the hill.' (1901) Károly Ferenczy played a fundamental role in creating a genuinely modern Hungarian school of painting. His importance lies in the way he absorbed several European tendencies and transformed them into something individual.
A real pleasure to see Constable’s 'The Hay Wain,' (1821), part of the excellent exhibition at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich. It represents a distillation of his profound emotional and artistic response to the scenery of his native county that was central to his art.
Charles Spencelayh achieved a precise, almost photographic level of detail in his domestic interiors. Here he depicts the prized possessions from the long lives of an elderly couple~ we can see them in the mirror (Grandfather’s & Grandmother’s Treasures, 1945) www.evelynwaugh.org.uk/styled-96/in...
Émile Friant, late-19C realist painter of provincial French life, first exhibited at age 15 and went on to create works such as this idyllic ‘Lovers, Autumn Evening’ (1888) Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy
French artist Gustave Caillebotte’s many passionate interests included gardening ~ in his Les Jardiniers (1875), bare-foot gardeners water the lettuces, a line of bell-shaped glass cloches protect tender young plants, & the back wall holds espaliered trees and tall cypresses
Here are some otters in hats to complete your day.
While the fund doesn't directly support the Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program, it has raised $5 million since 2006 for other organizations whose work complements all that we’re doing to recover this iconic species. bit.ly/3Upflix #WildlifeConservation #MarineMammal #SeaOtter #ActForTheOcean
Monterey Bay Aquarium joined 24 wildlife care & conservation orgs across the U.S. in a letter urging @noaa.gov to withdraw its review of California's federally approved Coastal Management Program. NOAA already reviewed and reaffirmed the program just last year.
As zoos, aquariums & rescue institutions, we engage millions of visitors on why healthy ecosystems matter. We're grateful for your support as we work toward a future where the ocean flourishes and people thrive. Read the statement here: mbayaq.co/4xqd99a

Coastal management programs protect waters nationwide, from the Great Lakes to both coasts. They're a key tool for states to safeguard coastal resources, blending federal-state partnership with local economic and environmental protection. California's program is a global model.

Claude Monet painted many snowscapes exploring the effect of light on freshly-fallen snow. In ‘The Magpie’ he introduces mauve-coloured shadows, as representing their actual colour in nature, instead of adopting the academic convention of black or dark grey (1868-69)
'Road to the Farm.' (1944) I find it difficult to think of any British landscape painter of Rowland Hilder's generation (he was born in 1905) whose work is as widely known but whose name is not. His work touched a strain of nostalgia for an unchanged and unchanging landscape.
Robert Borlase Smart was a frequent traveller, especially to Italy. From outside the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi in Venice, where this picture was painted, he could have chosen a view of the Ponte di Rialto but opted for the more modest Fondaco dei Tedeschi, next to it.
Helene Schjerfbeck's 1887 painting of a mother with her child is a moving and memorable image. It's also a clever portrait of a woman who doesn't look at us directly but her child does. As a late 19thC realist, Schjerfbeck explores the soul most effectively.
Gustav Wentzel's painting of his mother and son at breakfast one Sunday morning in 1882 takes us into his private domestic world and we witness something like the reality of life. The drama is implied, not shown.
