"Many at the public hearings on blanket rezoning spoke in support of more density — as long as it happened somewhere other than their own neighbourhood. This is frankly an impossible request for the city to fulfil, b/c if the policy only apply somewhere else, it will effectively be applied nowhere."
Leong: Blanket rezoning repealed in Calgary … so, what's next?
As Calgary politicians prepare to grapple again with new rules to govern more density in older neighbourhoods, they face the same problems.

"Being 'amenable to persuasion' is an expectation of councillors in every public hearing... But more than half of the council members who participated in public hearings on blanket rezoning, including Mayor Jeromy Farkas, had already publicly committed to repealing the policy." So they did🙃 #yyccc
Municipal public hearings… should we still have them? Let’s have a public hearing on whether they’re useful? 😂 #Calgary
There are many things I’m very proud of as a Canadian. MANY things. But every time I watch another media story about another ambitious push in renewable energy from China, I’m embarrassed that Canada isn’t aggressively working to quickly become a true global powerhouse in renewable energy.
If you’re interested in why it’s so hard to achieve better cities, listen to (and share) this. It was a turning point for me…a culmination of years of increasing determination to call out lies and disinformation, and the beginning of a thought process that eventually lead to @urbantruth.bsky.social.
“We're afraid of walkable distances now?” If you somehow missed the unhinged conspiracy about the common sense notion of 15-Minute Cities, listen to @brenttoderian.bsky.social’s National Australian Radio interview with @greenj.bsky.social. Very early on he called out the lies & tactics. #UrbanTruth
"Last night, City Council: -Made it harder to build homes -Added red tape -Removed a way for donut communities to grow the tax base -Encouraged sprawl -Told new arrivals to bring a car. Or 2. 3 maybe? -REPEALED a bylaw but REPLACED it with nothing, reneging on campaign promises. ONWARD!" #yyccc
Last night, City Council approved bylaw amendments that restore both the Land Use Bylaw Districts in Bylaw 1P2007 and the land use designation of affected parcels to their original state prior to blanket rezoning (citywide residential).
We do not accept Danielle Smith's UCP drawing electoral boundaries, just like we'd never accept an AB NDP govt doing the same. The UCP's minority commissioners are gerrymandering ridings to stay in power. It's an attack on democracy. It cannot be allowed. #ableg #gerrymandering

A war powers resolution will not be enough. Yes. We need to assert congressional authority and stop this illegal war in Iran. But, Trump is clearly an unstable warmonger at odds with the will of the people. Removal is the top priority. No more war criminal in the White House.

What jeromyyyc.bsky.social neglects to tell us is that $200M in higher provincial property taxes will build new schools on the edges of a sprawling Calgary. Yet only 69% of kids attending schools in CBE’s Central district actually live there. Sprawl costs us. #yyccc #ableg

A group from the Calgary Real Estate Board presented in #yyccc. I'm confused. They said R-CG won't reduce costs, but but shared this example of units dropping from $370K to $254K🤔 Their economist stated R-CG has had no impact 🤯 which begs the question WHY ARE WE WASTING TIME ON THIS?? #housing
