Gianni Infantino must stand down as Fifa president or otherwise be legally removed. No fresh chances can be made available for an official who has demolished trust in football’s integrity and governance, trashing all remaining credibility of the body that oversees the world’s most-cherished sport. Infantino was forced into a humiliating climbdown on Saturday morning when he accepted the failure of his plan to sell off portions of the World Cup to private investment. He resolved to resume dialogue about football’s growth “in the spirit of shared interest in our game”. But such a naked attempt to save his own skin cannot hold. No wonder, then, that the commentator Bjørge Lillelien went off on one like he did when Norway eventually chalked up their first victory against the Three Lions in September 1981. And if you haven’t yet read Lars Sivertsen’s entertaining account of that famous rant, right that wrong immediately! It’s been a lot closer between the two nations since then. In six subsequent meetings, England are two wins to one up with three draws, but it’s Norway’s sole victory that lingers longest in the memory: Oslo 1993, and a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win that marked the beginning of the end for poor old Graham Taylor. The famous yelps of “Do I not like that!” and “Can we not knock it?!” came earlier in that ill-fated campaign against Poland, but Phil Neal stole the show in Oslo with his spot-on impersonation of a lyrebird, while Taylor himself delivered a couple of off-screen “aw fucking hell”s that were a masterclass in comic timing and bathos. 4 red cards in the entire Qatar World Cup. 4 in Russia. 3 in 1st game of WC 2026. Last one was mad, denying a clear scoring opportunity when he's that far wide? Can't even be 50pc sure he'd have found team-mate with the cross. Epsom stewards have serious comp for worst sporting precedent of 2026.

The Gambling Commission licensed a Ponzi. It was warned that Football Index was a Ponzi 13 months before it crashed. It stood & watched as it went under with £100m+ of punters' cash. But when it comes to workplace sweeps on the World Cup, suddenly it's interested. Bizarre/shameful in equal measure.

It would be wrong to suggest that Aston Villa's performance tonight was the most blatant "not off" since those long-ago halcyon days when Reg Akehurst was trying to slide one in at the bottom of the weights for the Wokingham. But only because Reg was much more subtle about it.
