Screaming, crying, throwing up. You were missed. I don’t eat pork often but if I ever do, this is the only brand I want. Maybe it’s just a NC hang up. lol. The liver pudding is still in limbo. Sigh.
Today sees the start of #WITMonth (Women in Translation), an annual focus on books by women writers, initially written in languages other than English. To mark the occasion, here are ten brilliant books I heartly recommend - all by women in translation! 💙📚 jacquiwine.wordpress.com/2026/07/29/w...
Women Writers in Translation – some book recommendations for #WITMonth
As many of you know, August is #WITMonth (Women in Translation), a celebration of books by women writers, initially written in languages other than English (and then translated for English-speaking…

I am completely unqualified to judge Emily Wilson's translation as a translation, but it is extraordinarily accessible and readable, and both the 100 pages of intro material and the end notes (you can dip in and out of them) are so inviting and reader-friendly they feel like a private tutorial.
Finished Fahrenheit 451. How much can society be dumbed down? People are anesthetized by the funny videos of cats driving cars, politicians dancing to Thriller are IN, the old rare books are OUT. Critical thinking need not apply.
No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.
Scene stealer. Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe she’s Myrna Loy. Jeanette Macdonald was jealous of her beauty in a white dress for Love Me Tonight so they did a switcheroo with Myrna fitted in a black dress. She still outshone her. It’s her day!!!! 🎂🎂🎂

More people on MCR Advantage. Of course. By design. An aside, Medicare Advantage plans are the absolute worst if an elderly person needs a stay in a skilled nursing facility. They will end your stay whether you need more therapy or not. They really do devils work.

Loved it. The Brits are so good at simplicity and subtlety yet being so revealing/insightful. The book is melancholic but ends with possibility.

Earworm today. if you know this song, congratulations and I’m sorry. Haha Is this not a real toxic masculinity anthem? It was on a collection my parents had in the 80s. I wore those tapes out.
Finally found 84 Charing Cross Road on YouTube! In the cast is La Dench and I didn’t know it (forgot?). Omg, I’m HER worst fan, too. 😩 What a quiet gem of a movie. @jsmithcameron.bsky.social you have a look reminiscent of those glamour girls of yesteryear . The eyes! You were just lovely.
Here's a bit of that scene from Two Seconds. It is truly stunning.
Edward G. Robinson's breakdown at the end of #TwoSeconds is one of the finest pieces of acting I've ever seen. The sheer size of it, the daring is huge, almost to the point of absurdity. Yet his control is so delicate, so sure, that he pulls you in rather than pushing you away. Masterful. #TCMParty
61 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. Last year, Donald Trump and Republicans passed the largest cuts to Medicaid in history. Democrats will fight to restore Medicaid funding and expand affordable healthcare.
We are watching, in real time, the biggest fuck-up by any president in the history of the United States of America.
After reading about rare books being scanned and destroyed for AI, I decided to put this book on hold at library. 2 weeks waiting period, it said. 10 minutes later it was available. Oops. 😬 Now trying to read several at once. First time reading. #booksky
Watched Prada 2 yesterday. Everyone clap. 😆 I liked the first better but it’s enjoyable. Couldn’t get over Anne Hathaway. Such a beauty.
sorry to be pushing this a lot but my finances took a hit last summer when I had to step away from things when my Dad got ill/passed, then took a bigger hit when my cats got ill/pissed, then again when taxes were higher than expected, and now many freelance gigs have dried up so this is about it
If you’re a fan of my writing and would like to upgrade to a paid subscription now is the time: oldfilmsflicker.substack.com/SilentSummer... With this discount, you’d greatly support my ability to keep working as a freelancer for less than a cup of coffee a week!
I have seen some hype around this book. I don’t know her and I’ve never seen any of her shows or films. Hmm 🤔 Maybe not for me but letting you all know it’s on discount at bookshop.org
The practice of AI companies secretly buying millions of old books (some vanishingly rare), scanning them for AI training, then destroying them, epitomises everything that is wrong with today's exploitative AI industry. 🧵 1/2
