ME (Don Hertzfeldt, 2024): look, it's very very good, I have no idea how Hertzfeldt wrings so much beauty out of the simplest of visuals. Do prefer his stuff that has more narrative, tho, this is very much oops, all vibes. I'm aware this started as an Arcade Fire collab before Win got cancelled...

It's my birthday, so we're doing a special birthday ranking of WORLD OF TOMORROW (2015). Is it fair to say a 15-min short film is "better" than a feature when you view it in a completely different context. In the specific case of World of Tomorrow, yes. Yes it is. WoT beats Iwo Jima for sure.

Doing O Brother Where Art Thou today because we all love Odyssey discourse, don't we? A film with the courage to ask "what if Odysseus' crew recorded a hit song?" It is a banger of a song. Why didn't Skinny Christian Bale record a hit song for his Cambodian captors? Is he stupid? OBWAT wins.

The question isn't about whether Green's tech use is "pure." We trust people like him to do the work of finding out what current science says because no on has the time to research this stuff full-time. If his sources are AI hallucinations, then why should we believe him over anyone else?

my big takeaway from the Hank Green thing is to note how incoherent the entire discourse is there are categories of computing which are Pure, and which Hank is free to use but other categories of computing which Hank cannot use if a data center hosts the algorithm that promotes his video, fine…

I have never seen the Shyamalan Avatar but from my conversations it seems like "liking" Netflix Avatar is mostly "well at least it's better than Shyamalan Avatar," which is stunning to me. How is anything worse than Netflix Avatar? How is that possible?

Big Joel@bigjoel.bsky.social · 3d ago

Also Netflix Avatar is so bad that disliking it feels objective. It’s not that it’s actually a *fact* that it’s bad, but liking it makes you an alien to me. What do you mean you enjoy it

So obviously we all know this is very very bad but the most baffling thing to me is "six days later." Like, that's almost a week! Even if I assume they share cooking duties (which I definitely, definitely do not), wouldn't the most natural time for her to cook for him be like two days later?

Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"

Ranking INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023) on Popcorn List. It is not the worst Indy movie, and the opening with de-aged Indy voiced by not-even-a-little-bit-de-aged Harrison Ford is hilarious. It is, however, worse than Rescue Dawn.

Day three thousand and one of loitering at the castle. I dunno, starting to get a little depressed. There are so many suitors here, why would she pick me? At least it's kind of fun to be a dick to Odysseus' dog.

Day three thousand of loitering around Castle Ithaca trying to convince Penelope to let me fuck her. One of these other suitors is acting like he's our boss? Like fuck off, dude.

This is going to result in a prolonged siege of Penn that ends when Penn's library accepts a mysterious, anonymous gift of an oversized book, which turns out to contain a company of armed critics who then go on a rampage in the Classics department.

Ranking HEAVY METAL (1981) on Popcorn List today. This is a movie with a simple thematic thesis: looking at boobies is awesome. I don’t disagree, but there’s something kind of offputting about a film that doesn't even try to pretend it has other things on its mind. We open with a loss to Iwo Jima.

Ranking INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM today. I like it on a setpiece level but not really on a story level. I don’t think it beats Iwo Jima, nothing in Temple is as good as that scene of ten dudes in a row committing grenade seppuku.

Ranking THE CREATOR. Maybe this movie would be good if John David Washington weren't the single most sauceless actor working today. Unfortunately he is, and he makes the film narratively and emotionally empty. It's worse than Letters from Iwo Jima, I tell you what.
