Imagine the government telling a musician “we don’t criminalize you or your music, but we will do anything it takes to arrest and harass anyone who may want to come to your show or even listen to your music online.” This is what Sweden, France and many US states tell sex workers.

This week sex workers went to the French Senate to present a proposed bill to decriminalise sex work, developed by sex workers themselves. France has now had the disastrous Nordic model (client criminalisation) for 10 years. The fight for decrim goes on! 💪

Just re-watched The Last Seduction for the first time in a long time. - genius level performance by Linda Fiorentino totally holds up - the transphobic twist is so wrong and insane. I had entirely erased it from my memory - same for the sexual violence scene - Bill Pullman 🙌🏼

I fantasize that there was one network exec in the 80s and 90s whose only note for showrunners was always “cool, but add an exotic pet.” In my mind, this theoretical suit was responsible for both the alligator in Miami Vice and the monkey in Friends.

“The Nordic Model, despite numerous rebrands, still causes significant harm to sex workers. Sex workers cannot work together for safety, and still bear the brunt of criminalisation. ‘We’ve created an environment which is absolutely perfect for abusing sex workers.’”

THE NORDIC MODEL
(AKA the Swedish Model, Client Criminalization, or the “Equality Model”)
WHAT: selling sex is indirectly criminalized, buying sex is illegal, third parties are illegal
WHERE: Sweden, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Israel, Canada
IMPACT:
- Sex workers have a reduced ability to screen clients and negotiate, meaning they take more risks and are unable to employ safety strategies
- Increased violence against sex workers – 92% more violent crimes against sex workers reported to UglyMugsle following the introduction of client criminalization
- “We’ve somehow created an environment that is absolutely perfect for abusing sex workers” (Smyth in Amnesty International, 2022)

“IMPORTANT: Dear Build-A-Bear Group attendees—If using voice-to-text for directions, please over-enunciate the words, as some of us have had some very unfortunate incidents with security staff for the Bilderberg Group meeting down the street.”
