Colombia's next Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar Bula Escobar, appears to deny the scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change. The Santos, Duque & Petro govts worked actively to support global climate action not least given Colombia is highly vulnerable to climate impacts.

Quite an extraordinary interview by Colombia's incoming Minister of Envir., Fabio Arjona. He said the 3 enemies of sustainability are poverty, ignorance & environmental hysteria. Asked if they'd participate in the Santa Marta process to transition away from FFs...🧵 caracol.com.co/2026/07/03/m...

For a PhD student @sussex.ac.uk exploring Colombia's energy transition, it was a great privilege to attend the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, witness history being made and talk to many of the Colombians working tirelessly to make that transition a reality 🧵

🎉Happy 100th Birthday to the inimitable David Attenborough. who I had the good fortune to briefly meet in 2015!! Sir David has spent a lifetime teaching us about the beauty, fragility and importance of nature, and how we are connected to it. Today we need to listen to him more than ever.

As Petro prepares to meet Trump on Feb 3, I argue in this new commentary for Backchannel that despite their various disagreements – and the potential for diplomatic fireworks – there is one unlikely area where a deal could emerge: Venezuela’s gas. backchannel1.substack.com/p/will-petro...

Will Petro stand up to Trump on climate?

Petro can confront Trump on climate change and risk confrontation or focus on a gas deal among other areas, that improves relations with Washington.

Amid worsening geopolitics, the EU-CELAC summit showed that climate action remains a strategic priority for both regions. In this @rielcano.bsky.social commentary, I show how they can enhance cooperation by developing fossil fuel transition roadmaps & confronting misinformation & disinformation.

The IV EU-CELAC summit’s outcomes on climate action can be built upon in 2026

Considering the volatile geopolitical situation, the IV EU-CELAC summit in Santa Marta was a successful summit.

Important new report by @ember-energy.org and Transforma on Colombia's fossil gas supply challenges shows that eletrification and efficiency are the way forward to mitigate future growth in total demand. Fracking and locking the country further into fossil fuel dependence is not.

NEW | 🇨🇴 Colombia faces a growing gas supply gap – but it can reduce its dependence on imported gas by 2030 with electrification and efficiency. A new report from Ember + Transforma shows how. 🧵 1/4

At COP30, Colombia pushed for text on the transition away from fossil fuels. But what's happening with its domestic energy transition? I discussed this w/ @juliaradio.bsky.social for an NPR article, which takes a sober look at the situation instead of repeating various dodgy claims made elsewhere.

This oil producer announced it would move away from oil. Here's what happened next

Two years ago Colombia pledged to stop exploring for new oil, gas and coal. On the world stage, this was a big deal. Here's what's happened since.

What’s been happening with SUV sales in the UK? 🚘 SUV sales have continued to grow in the UK market this year - meaning more emissions, safety risks and road wear, and less space on our roads for pedestrians and communities 📈

Great to see the UK join 🇨🇴 & 🇩🇰 in ending the granting of new oil & gas licences! The UK should now reject Rosebank & join BOGA. As 🇨🇴 & 🇳🇱 prepare to host the 1st Int Conf on the Just Transition Away from FFs in 2026, let's hope the UK actively participates & supports 🇨🇴's country platform.

#Breaking | The Gov't of the UK has adopted a policy to ban new oil and gas exploration. 👏 With this plan—which includes just transition elements for workers & communities—the UK becomes the 🌎's largest producer so far to end new licensing. 🧵1/4 @nataliejones.bsky.social

BREAKING 🚨: The government has just announced that they are ending new oil and gas exploration in the UK and have started a plan for workers and communities to transition away from fossil fuels. 🧵

As scores of countries push for the inclusion of a roadmap to implement a just, orderly & equitable transition away from FFs at #cop30, Colombia has announced that in alliance w/ The Netherlands, they will host the 1st intl conf on a just transition away from FFs from April 28-29 2026.

On X, Colombia's Irene Vélez, has shared a letter sent to the #COP30 pres signed by 40 countries. It expresses "deep concern about the current proposal" & says "we cannot support an outcome that doesn't include a roadmap to implement a just, orderly & equitable transition to move away from FFs.”
