River is pinning them to the nearest wall and asking them what they know about his past. He doesn't remember much about it but he's pretty sure he cut all ties on purpose, so how the fuck do they know who his mother is? Leather shrugs and says "There's worse things to be, I guess."

Slaying Garlean soldiers never felt good, but it was morally justified at the time - they signed up to conquer Eorzeans, they put themselves in harm's way when Eorzeans fought back. Since learning how liberally the Garlean army used conscripts from conquered lands, it's one of his biggest regrets.
