🧬 A gentler way to pump blood for life support! We report a new approach to blood pumping for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) that uses magnetic liquid interfaces instead of solid mechanical parts to move blood.

1/ 🔬✨ At the #HealthResearch Ceremony 2025, we celebrated the researchers who push science forward with curiosity, bold ideas and a shared commitment to improving people’s health. A day of talent, dialogue and collaboration. What were the highlights of the day? 👀⬇️

1/ ECMO takes over heart and lung function, but current systems can damage blood and cause bleeding or clots. With a #HealthResearch grant, @hermanslab.bsky.social is developing a system that transports blood safely, reducing damage. 👇 https://tinyurl.com/4694utw9

1/📢Today is the day! This afternoon we celebrate the Health Research Ceremony 2025, where the 34 researchers selected in this year’s Health Research Call will receive their awards — recognizing projects that are pioneering health innovation in Spain and Portugal. Stay tuned!🔜

We're hiring! I need a mechanical/biomedical engineer to work on blood pumping for ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation): euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/374571 It is using our 'magnetostaltic' pumps, first shown in our 2020 Nature paper: rdcu.be/b3ZuF (see Fig. 4). We have since scaled to 1 L/min.

Remember this? In the 1990s, a popular view of nanotechnology claimed that molecular gears like this, made of diamondoid carbon, were going to be the components of molecular-scale assemblers and nanobots. But that vision hasn't come to pass. My article in Aeon explores why. aeon.co/essays/no-su...
