Our statement on the deeply worrying recent events in Belfast and across the United Kingdom.

HIAS+JCORE is deeply worried by recent events in Belfast and across the United Kingdom.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victim of Tuesday evening’s attack and their family. While details are still being confirmed, the reported information is profoundly disturbing.

However, it is contemptible that this shocking incident has been used to incite racist violence and stoke division.

Across Belfast, people and entire communities have been left terrified and subjected to appalling intimidation. The ugly scenes of houses and cars set alight – leaving many scared for their lives – have no place in our society.

We express our solidarity to all those who were forced to flee or hide in their homes yesterday evening. No one should have to live through such fear.

Worryingly, such outbreaks of violence are becoming a repeated pattern. Be it Southport, Southampton, or Belfast, we are horrified that the far-right are seeking to exploit horrific events for their own hateful, dangerous agenda.

As an organisation guided by Jewish experience, we also recognise uncomfortable historic parallels in such unrest.

Our community perhaps understands more than most what it means to be made to feel unwelcome and marginalised.

oday, we need to continue to stand alongside migrant and refugee communities who will be understandably distressed. People who have made the UK their new home must be able to live in peace and dignity.

Now, more than ever, is the time for responsible leadership, that makes clear there is no place in our national conversation for rhetoric which fuels tension and division. By speaking out against racism, and making a positive case for welcome, our politicians can help build a strong, cohesive society that is safe for all.

This Government has all too often failed refugees and people seeking asylum. We're concerned that today's King's Speech leads us further down an unwelcoming, hostile path. As we move into the new parliamentary term, we need political leaders to show solidarity and return compassion to policy.

Since their election in July 2024, this Government has all too often failed refugees and people seeking asylum.

Consecutive Home Secretaries have introduced policies that attack refugee rights – from curtailing access to citizenship and pausing refugee family reunion, to scrapping permanent refugee status.

Time and again displaced people have cruelly been used as a political football.

We are now worried that today's King's Speech leads us further down an unwelcoming, hostile path: one where deterrence is prioritised over protection.

The new Immigration Bill announced puts into motion the Government's Earned Settlement Model, which will see refugees wait years for access to settlement.

We are also concerned about the reinterpretation of human rights law – weakening protection from torture and the right to family life.

HIAS+JCORE believes that Britain is at its best when we show welcome and lead with compassion. That is what our community once needed; it is what refugees today deserve too.

So, as we move forward into another parliamentary term, we urge the Government to take responsible actions that promote dignity, respect, partnership and solidarity.

We're horrified by the cowardly arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances this morning. At this alarming time of rising antisemitism, we must continue to stand together against hate, wherever it is found.

While we are relieved that no-one was injured, this shameful incident will heighten anxiety across the Jewish community.

Hatzola provides vital services to people of all communities and faiths. That spirit of solidarity and responsibility is so important amidst a time of growing division and tension.

Today’s attack was a cowardly assault on those compassionate principles.

But at a time of rising antisemitism, we must continue to stand together with others to build the safer, more cohesive society we all need.

Reads: In recent weeks, we have all seen the horrific consequences of ICE raids across the United States. Amidst this backdrop, we are incredibly concerned that Reform UK is proposing the introduction of a similar deportation agency in the UK.
Let us be clear what this would mean. People left terrified to go to work. Children unable to go to school. Members of our own local communities scapegoated and too frightened to walk the streets.

Reads: When punitive enforcement and divisive narratives trump dignity and welcome, the very fabric of our society is damaged. Our partner organisation, HIAS, is already witnessing these impacts every day through the refugees and immigrants they serve. Their experience should be a warning to us all: when we allow our immigration policy to be led by hate and fear, not compassion and responsibility, the results can be catastrophic.

Reads: This is a worrying moment. But guided by our Jewish values, we will continue to advocate for an immigration system that upholds human dignity, and where values of solidarity and fairness are core.
