D&D surely is the lingua franca of Actual Play, just like English is the linguistic lingua franca of Actual Plays. That doesn't mean you can't introduce people to new languages. Just like "actual" languages, the more TTRPGs you "speak", the more colorful your experience in the hobby will be.

I'm a strong proponent of (sparing) use of real time mechanics in TTRPGs. If you need to hit a major plot beat by end of session, simply tell them that something important is happening at 9PM real time, and they'd better be ready for it. It sharpens their mind and play like nobody's business.
