I can't do what I do for a living (sort of! increasingly less!) in really any other city but LA. If I end up having to switch careers in middle age (seems likely!), I don't want to move someplace where the likelihood of random people screaming gay slurs at me (like in Michigan) goes way back up

As conservative as it was in the small rural college town I grew up in, I could at least hang with the kids of the other college employees

Places with colleges, federal projects, etc. Even the conservative small towns with the hospital or county seat are usually a bit less stiflingly right wing.

Every so often, someone on the city pop subreddit asks if there is music from non-Japanese countries that sounds like city pop, with no idea how much of it came from American R&B. Only some of the time will someone (correctly) reply that they should look into yacht rock
