This week, Slate staff was notified that three employees—all members of the union—were being laid off. Each was a member of Slate’s podcast staff. With their departure, Slate is reducing its audio content, which includes job reductions for a number of contractors. Slate Union's official statement:

Hot off the presses 📰 Bargaining committee was on 🔥 yesterday & we’re back at the table today! We won’t back down as we fight for just compensation, equitable severance and AI protections that let us create the fearless, top-notch journalism the world needs now. ✊ #faircontractnow

HuffPost Union bargaining committee members pose for a photo on the first day of in-person bargaining.

We received our first counterproposals from management today with disappointing language — including no guaranteed wage increases this year and rollbacks of hard-fought language on diversity and severance. We stand united and ready to fight for the contract we deserve.

Solidarity with our @voxmediaunion.bsky.social members fighting for a fair contract. Vox management has refused to even give meaningful counters to our proposals. Stay tuned for ways to support as the 30-day countdown to contract expiration begins. ⏰

As of today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Vox Media only has 30 days to negotiate a new contract with the Vox Media Union before our current one expires.

We are extremely disappointed with SB Nation's decision to layoff staff at its popular YouTube hub Secret Base. Not only is this a blow to a talented team, it undercuts the creator-driven and subscription-driven models of sustainability that Vox Media has been trying to cultivate. We must do better.

Today, the Vox Media Union learned three members at SB Nation’s Secret Base team have been let go, marking the third consecutive month of layoffs at Vox Media-owned brands.

As we and our colleagues at New York Magazine continue to make strides for our workers through bargaining, the company continues its death-by-a-thousand-cuts approach. These short-sighted actions from management have gutted our newsrooms and added to the ongoing uncertainty in the media industry. It is devastating to these individuals, and to our remaining staff, who are given few answers as to how downsizing is a sustainable practice moving forward.

Secret Base has been creator-led and personality-driven from its inception, exemplified by their successful community-funded Patreon, Top Secret Base. It will not be the same without these hard-working, experienced, smart, talented, and exceptionally creative employees. It is insulting to them for the company to describe these cuts as “necessary.”

The Writers Guild of America East and Vox Media Union will do everything we can to help and support the colleagues who are leaving us, just as we have supported our colleagues impacted by previous layoffs around the company. We continue the fight for transparency, equity, and protections in bargaining, where we set new standards for workers in the entire digital media industry.

After nearly a decade at HuffPost, today is my last day. I’ve grown so much & I’m grateful for the journey. This has been a dream job and now I’m on to new dreams. I’ll still be writing, hosting and moderating, just doing it as a freelancer for now. Pitch and commission me at taryn@tarynfinley.com.

Yesterday, I was laid off after 10 years at HuffPost. I’m obviously gutted. But once I take a breath, I’ll be open to jobs & freelance work, both in journalism and outside of it, given the state of our industry. To get in touch: bymarinafang@gmail.com Signal: marinafang.72

After over a decade at @HuffPost, I’ve decided to take a buyout in the latest round of layoffs. It's tough to leave a place I love & I’m so grateful for all the people here, & all the faith they’ve put in me through the years.

A month ago was my 1st day @HuffPost as National Investigative Reporter, what I thought was a new chapter for me Today I was laid off, as part of cuts they announced 3 hrs into my first day I was just gearing up to dig into 3 investigations. If your newsroom is hiring reach out

After 9 years, my time at HuffPost has come to an end. Amid another round of bloodbath layoffs this week, I raised my hand for a buyout — a decision that stung but felt right for me. I'm outraged for all my wonderful colleagues who are losing jobs due to no fault of their own.
