100% this. Social media in particular has its many downsides, but I moved around a lot as a kid to a bunch of different countries, and there are so many people who I now consider my closest friends that I would simply not have been able to really maintain contact with in any other era.

I've said this before but I think it is an increasingly significant problem for society that the internet's economic structures have developed in a way that massively incentivises being incredibly obnoxious.
Josh Gondelman@joshgondelman.bsky.social · 5h agoThis is such an great feature (Rebecca is great!), and I've been thinking about it for a few days. IMO, "Influencer" in the ten-years-ago sense was really a LOT of jobs (spokesmodel/copywriter/etc.) but now it's morphing, at least in part, into "intentionally annoying person" which feels worse.
This is fascinating and revealing. Even as a bit of an AI skeptic I think it will be (and already has been) transformative, and to an extent trying to stop its further spread is like trying to hold back the tide, but I use it very little myself in my day-to-day life and I don't think I'm unusual

Another day, another plan originating from the UK that would involve the EU making wholesale changes to its own internal and external arrangements to suit the interests and political preferences of a neighbouring non-member state.

Leaving all morality aside, this for me is the core problem with SpaceX's business plans: they are reliant on continued exponential growth that would be difficult at the best of times, but which really run into the problem of how many governments will not want key infrastructure run by Musk.

One notable thing about playing the first Halo now (even a remake of it) is how much more streamlined it is than the later games, which have become so bogged down in the tedious and increasingly arcane lore of the franchise.

The OG remains one of my favourite games and this new version looks very pretty and there are some minor gameplay updates from the original that work quite well. Really dislike some of the reworked cutscenes and re-recorded dialogue though.
Being dead is not some kind of state line where, if you can just cross the border, all your trespasses evaporate. The flowers still wither where you poured salt. The living continue to suffer the consequences of your actions. People are entitled to say, he made the garden worse, and now he is gone.

Always really enjoy it when Jon Bernthal crops up in something. He does tend to always play essentially the same character but he's undeniably great it it.

no real lessons about the state of the box office from this one, i think. no deeper meaning about trend lines or narratives about marvel exhaustion. people still just really like spider-man

And that's the full replay of The Witcher 3 and its DLC done. What a wonderful, remarkable game - so stylish and well-designed and well-written. Up there with my favourite games of all time alongside Resident Evil 4 and The Last of Us. Can't wait to play the new stuff once it's released.

UEFA has given FIFA President Gianni Infantino an ultimatum: resign or face a no-confidence vote, The Telegraph reports . It says all 55 members would back it. Only 43 votes are needed.
To go into a bit more detail: Brand New Day is really enjoyable when it remembers it's a Spider-Man film and focuses on Spider-Man. But huge stretches are spent on other characters, who have been shoehorned in purely to tie the film into other Marvel properties. It's deeply frustrating and cynical
Hugo Gordon@hugogordon.bsky.social · 4d ago18) Spider-Man: Brand New Day Intermittently actually quite good (Tom Holland is a very engaging Spidey) but it's blighted by the usual MCU problem of being overstuffed, overlong, and overly interested in setting up the next film in the endless franchise.
