Chopping wood. Carrying water. Living in Alaska. Reader, writer, researcher. You’ll find me on a walk, playing in the snow, or growing things.

Do you have any good rutabaga recipes to share? I’m growing them for the first time & really love the greens sautéed with garlic. But the root wasn’t great the way I cooked it. I did try search, but I need a pre-2022 filter to keep out the really bad (AI vibes) recipes. #rutabaga #recipes #garden

Travel treats! It’s a little on the hot side, and there is a wild fire nearby. But it’s still nice to be out of Alaska for a bit. I’ve definitely fallen for the PNW flower and plant stands.

It's nice to have some sunny days. And I found a columbine that made it through our brutal winter. The plant app wants it to be parsley, but I definitely did not plant parsley there ever.

It’s a sad night with Colbert canceled for politics. Journalism me (💜 free speech, 4th estate & muckraking) is pissed. I also think (💜 equality, interdependence & our future) … so many white dudes in late night. While they’re aiming for silence, I hope instead it’s making space for something new.

It gives me hope that teens boycotted a coffee shop for choosing ai over local art. I’ve also seen a gift returned because the art on it was obviously ai. At minimum ai is frustrating. Worst case, it’s intended to break our trust in and value of real art and writing by filling the space with slop.

NEW — My first true foray into AI haterdom is about how those of us not convinced by AI’s inevitability are a real constituency worthy of a voice. Give it a read:

Today we did a photo tour of Juneau. A friend is moving away and a gift is in progress. It will include snapshots of downtown (from the library), cruise ships (from Douglas), the glacier, a harbor, a state flag. Maybe even an eagle on a pole on Egan. There is still a mountain of snow at the glacier.

Realizing I like carrot tops more than carrots. Much much more. In chimichurri. On sautéed cauliflower with garlic. Now I’m really looking forward to fresh produce this summer! And the harvest fest.

I’m listening to the city finance committee meeting and it pains me to hear an assembly member not aware of what the social services grant fund is or how it works. It is not funding JCC, they manage it. But at least it failed, the others understand. Sad about the Douglas fire station though.

Really hating how streaming services are releasing weekly episodes. Everyone moved away from broadcast tv for more control and no ads, old services collapsed, and now streaming is bringing back ads and schedules - but you have to pay for a ton of services to see what used to just be on tv.

Trump fired all 24 members of the National Science Board, the body that oversees NSF. The institutional design that built American science is at stake.

Beautiful sunset view at the Douglas harbor tonight. What brought us down there was the question “what’s that floating in the water?” (Photo in comments) And now I will sing Pixies songs the rest of the night.

Eagerly awaiting Yesteryear for a dark humor fix. (Also have JGT Play Crawl's Grief Nation on my calendar.) But got the notice that my book order has been help up in Anchorage for a "security check." Guess mocking trad wives is up there with discussing economic inequality & same sex animal parents.
