Breaking News ! Le VLT a obtenu des preuves solides que Bételgeuse, l’une des étoiles les plus célèbres du ciel nocturne, dans la constellation d'Orion, n’est pas seule. L'instrument a capturé l’image la plus nette jamais faite de Bételgeuse B, cette étoile en orbite autour de Bételgeuse.

L'image insérée au centre de cette illustration a été prise en janvier 2019 à l'aide de l'instrument SPHERE installé sur le VLT de l'ESO, et montre Bételgeuse elle-même.L'image de l'encart de gauche a été prise en décembre 2024, moment où l'on prévoyait que l'étoile compagnon serait la plus éloignée de Bételgeuse vue depuis la Terre. Sur cet encart, Bételgeuse a été supprimée, révélant une source (marquée d'un réticule) qui correspondrait à Bételgeuse B.
