Great example— Prey is arguably one of the best of the franchise. Ring Shout kind of does this—inserts a racist film classic into the timeline it represents, where the monster hunters of the South are African Americans, and the movie is a dangerous calling. This one’s a thinker. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat weeeell, one day I plan to write a tale of revenge, but more horror-based due to things I've experienced in the past. I got depressed a lot when I was young (and still do, of course). It's influences how I play with darkness. It's not always an enemy. Sometimes it's a friend.

Probably a fair amount. Worst Summer was massively influenced by my retail experience. SOUR DOE is riddled with my childhood of growing up in the absolute middle of nowhere and hearing weird shit in the woods, haha. My WIP is basically me dealing with my dad's death. Etc #HorrorWritersChat

All my horror protagonists are me minus therapy. Withrow's the part that wanted to hide from the world. Roderick's the part that wants revenge. Reginald is the part of me that grew up in isolated estrangement. And I try to give all of them a chance to heal in hopes I might, too. #HorrorWritersChat

Writing "Hunger" was also an exercise in releasing my own trauma around my time in Macon. I was living in extended stays, and literally wanting for food for a month, and watched, from outside, the way racism continued to play into the quotidian life there. "Hunger" was cathartic. #HorrorWritersChat

I mean, I’m boring but I grew up in a small town environment where everyone’s secrets are everyone’s business. That definitely seeps into my work. The Schoharie is about that more than the angry spirit story. The current WIP is all about small town gossip. Even w/its ghosts. #HorrorWritersChat

It depends ENTIRELY on the story. One of my characters has like, I'm not even kidding, 30k words about his life. Others just get a page! The 30k character is Kyle from The Worst Summer of My Life. He has a LOT of backstory, not all of my which will ever be revealed lol. #HorrorWritersChat

I always give them a lot of backstory, even if it never makes it into the story. At least, for my novel characters. My shorts characters usually have at least a cursory wound and such. e.g. Sebastian of my novel was a priest who left for his (consensual) lover...and was rejected #HorrorWritersChat

LOTS. Horror is "scary," but that fear only works if trauma-sharpened characters have hopes & joys to protect. For instance: Reginald recalls a hundred harms large & small yet the moment he sees a chance at love his heart opens. He's always used cynicism to protect a tender soul. #HorrorWritersChat

I encountered an exhibit at the Tubman Museum, in Macon, with the ads people would put in the local newspaper, when the people they enslaved ran away. It was horrifying on its own. I wondered about the ghosts of generational trauma, and so wrote "Hunger"with this in mind. #HorrorWritersChat

It can be significant. In Perfect Prophet, we meet the MC when he gets shot. But he’s been running from his past of a bad family upbringing. He’s avoided sharing his past, but things are happening that chip away at it thoughout the story. #HorrorWritersChat

How to get my fiancee to understand why I wear a mask? She's saying things like, "There's not many people here" and such and just Yes, I know most people don't mask But I don't want to contribute to that. Only place I don't mask is restaurants since, well, kinda need mouth uncovered to eat
