In too many countries, internal displacement is becoming increasingly protracted. Over the past decade, the number of countries hosting three million or more internally displaced people has tripled. For millions of people, displacement lasts for years, with few opportunities to rebuild.

Conflict and disaster displacement often overlap. Last year, 88 per cent of the countries reporting conflict displacement also reported disaster displacement. When they collide, people often experience cycles of displacement.

Conflict and violence triggered a record number of internal displacements in 2025. At the same time, millions of people remain displaced within their own countries, many unable to return home or rebuild their lives.

One decade. One trend. The number of people living in internal displacement has more than doubled since 2016. Year after year, the figure has grown and remains near record highs. 82.2 million people are displaced within their own countries. The second-highest figure on record.
