That part about the reader drowning in their own imagination is so powerful here. I often have to remind myself as a writer not to give out *too* many details. Better to plant the seeds of terror and let them blossom in the mind of the reader. 👏👏

This is a tricky question, as I personally love both. I love details of design revel in the horror of a monster hurtling upon you. But there is also something deeply satisfying in making the reader drown in their own imagination with scarce information given. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Some of my creatures are not just physical, but also supernatural so they attack the soul. Then you have others who go for the mind, then I have some who go for the imagination. Then I have stuff that "attacks" reality itself. Just fighting them can upend literal physics.

My favorite kinds of monster designs are the ones that almost entirely defy description. The fear of the unknown works really well in cases like this. I like the term "Otherness" here for that reason.

Generally, it's because of their Otherness. Whether it's because they're godlike entities, carnivorous horses, or a mummified corpse, the fact that they're so far from the norm sets my characters on edge. #HorrorWritersChat

The intention behind the scares varies from story to story, but more often than not, I'd say that my monsters remind characters of their past trauma or their past sins. The very sight of them forces my characters to confront deep-seated and repressed memories. #HorrorWritersChat

Trauma is a major theme I explore in my horror. Representing it physically is difficult, but I often try to include symbolic elements to bridge the gap. Example: an abusive alcoholic's monster form has shards of glass embedded in their skin and broken bottles for eyes. #HorrorWritersChat
