We mourn the passing of Joachim Nui Sr. respected Elder, knowledge keeper, one of the last nomadic Innu Elders, last traditional Innu drummer in Labrador. Passed today at age 92 in his home in Natuashish surrounded by his family, children, grand-children, great-grandchildren and community members.

Innu Nation was pleased that MP Philip Earle accepted Chief Eugene Hart's invitation to speak to the community of Sheshatshiu this morning. We also acknowledge the many Innu who shared their concerns and insight. MP Earle has committed to take our concerns to Ottawa.

After meeting with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador they declined to change their position on blocking the Innu Culture and Heritage Exhibition as is. They chose to continue to deny our indigenous history during National Indigenous History Month. Innu protested in Goose Bay.

Innu Nation extends its sincere congratulations to Jolene Ashini on being called to the bar today in Goose Bay, NL. This is a historic and proud moment for the Innu people. Jolene is the first Innu person in Labrador to become a lawyer. She is a graduate of University of Victoria’s law program.

Innu leadership have announced the ratification vote for the revised out of court settlement agreement with Hydro-Québec will be held in both communities from May 29-June 1. Innu Nation is committed to ensuring that all our members have the information that they need to make an informed decision.
