This paper tested a basic assumption behind Likert scales that more response options mean better measurement. The usual result was replicated: reliability rises as options increase from two up to about six. But:

Ask clients what therapy actually did for them, and symptom reduction isn't the whole answer. This paper pulled together 177 qualitative studies, 24 countries, 2,908 clients aged 18 to 95, to find out what people themselves say changed.

When a participant disagrees with 'I am happy' and also disagrees with 'I am unhappy,' scoring models may see a contradiction. This paper argues that's a sensible answer if the person’s true position sits somewhere in the middle.
