Working through some Mountain Bluebird data, needed a break, figured I'd share this great photo, taken up in the Bodie Hills in California! (And now going to get some coffee....) Hope you're having a beautiful bluebird kind of day, yourself!
🪶[SOUND ON] If you live in the western US and are in riparian habitat or really any place with diverse vegetation/edge habitat you may be hearing a lot of this sound lately. Do you know what bird this is? We'll post the answer tomorrow.
White-breasted nuthatches nesting in an oak knot close to our patio a few years ago. I timed the parents for an hour and it was close to this rate (had a big oak worm pulse that spring, so finding prey was the easy part.)

🪶The bright yellow gapes of nestling Chestnut-backed Chickadees help their parents find their target when feeding nestlings in the dark conditions of their cavity nest. (This one is a fledgling obviously, but the gape remains.)

Tallulah Cunningham@yesthattallulah.bsky.social · 4w agoPasses on a bat fact in both retaliation and appreciation: The Australian Golden-tipped Bat roosts in the abandoned(?) nests of Peep-warblers (or "Gerygones"). Which is a big problem for both species when bushfires impact on the old growth forests they inhabit.
