🪶It's juvenile bird season! They can be tricky to ID if don't get a look at their parents. Do you know who this is?

(1/4) Really excited that the first analysis of my PhD was published in Proceedings B! After analyzing half a million bird banding records across 92 species from @instbirdpop.bsky.social, we found lower female survival in 35 passerine species. doi.org/10.1098/rspb...
Female North American passerine birds have lower apparent survival than males
Abstract. Survival is a fundamental organismal trait which can vary by sex, yet the extent of sex-biased survival is largely unknown across most taxa. To a

The answer to yesterday's "Who's That Bird" sound quiz is Black-headed Grosbeak! 🪶
Working through some Mountain Bluebird data, needed a break, figured I'd share this great photo, taken up in the Bodie Hills in California! (And now going to get some coffee....) Hope you're having a beautiful bluebird kind of day, yourself!
🪶[SOUND ON] If you live in the western US and are in riparian habitat or really any place with diverse vegetation/edge habitat you may be hearing a lot of this sound lately. Do you know what bird this is? We'll post the answer tomorrow.
White-breasted nuthatches nesting in an oak knot close to our patio a few years ago. I timed the parents for an hour and it was close to this rate (had a big oak worm pulse that spring, so finding prey was the easy part.)
Did you ask for a bird fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. 🪶
🪶The bright yellow gapes of nestling Chestnut-backed Chickadees help their parents find their target when feeding nestlings in the dark conditions of their cavity nest. (This one is a fledgling obviously, but the gape remains.)
Congrats @dane2.bsky.social ! You did it again!

🪶 Hope your weekend is as freaking fabulous as this Anna's Hummingbird!
🪶🦇 This is so cool! Thank you Tallulah. We love bat facts!
Passes on a bat fact in both retaliation and appreciation: The Australian Golden-tipped Bat roosts in the abandoned(?) nests of Peep-warblers (or "Gerygones"). Which is a big problem for both species when bushfires impact on the old growth forests they inhabit.
🪶 Hope you had something tasty for dinner tonight!
