Imagine any of us who work in higher ed talking about a set of students the way the UM athletic director is talking about these students. Try it out loud and in front of a mirror and see how far you get before you realize you look and sound gross.
And for folks who need a reminder, the university’s current chancellor never paid back the $80k+ he received to serve as consultant for a search that led to his own hiring.

This suit isn’t about students paying back money they took. It’s about a university suing students who didn’t want to play there anymore, eight months before the season starts. It’s deplorable.

Y’all. They signed papers in early January and then decided not to come to school before classes started. There’s no world where the conditions under which they signed these papers, decided not to attend school, and get sued for a combined $1 million is anything other than straight up exploitation.

The university seeks $550,000 from Umanmielen and $400,000 from Harper, according to the lawsuits filed Monday in Lafayette County Circuit Court in Oxford, Mississippi. buff.ly/PUrb8nE

I want us to think carefully about what this lawsuit says about a class of students: that they owe the university their labor, or else. I don’t care what legal standing the university has here, they’re suing students for wanting to go elsewhere and that’s simply deplorable.
