Our paper "Gene ancestries reveal diverse microbial associations during eukaryogenesis.” is finally out in Nature. Eukaryogenesis was likely a gradual process shaped by multiple microbial partners and virus-mediated gene transfer, rather than a single binary symbiosis. doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Almudi #EED2026: the new male-specific eye evolved with gene duplication (dsx), specialisation and co-option of the gene regulatory network. The new dsx is Y-linked, thus new eye only in males.

Almudi #EED2026: single-cell of mayfly early nymph head: 7 eye-related clusters. Most clusters are male-biased: more of the same types of eye development cells, to make the extra TurbEye. The gene regulatory network of TurbEye have some novel interactions between TFs.

Isabel Almudi: Cleon dipterum mayflies lay eggs in water, which hatch immediately. At hatching, males and females have the same eyes, then during nymph stages the males develop an extra eye on top of the head. #EED2026
