Random creature spotlight: kobolds from one of my writing projects. They are extremophiles who exploit very hot and very cold ecological niches. Their colony structure is adapted to a boom and bust cycle depending on whether a dragon inhabits their cave...

Sketchy drawing of a kobold in cold type and warm type, with the same temperature gradient colours. The cold phase is fully furred with a dense thick coat and a facial disk, and is mostly coloured to minimise heat loss. The warm phase version is physically smaller, hairless aside from the head, and coloured a variety of shades along the gradient. Three drawings of Holly, a warm phase kobold with an injured tail-tip. He is holding a black and red sword in two drawings. They demonstrate how he looks in different stages of reacting to his environment temperatures. Three kobolds walking quadrupedally, showing how their colours change depending on their environment, their skin changing tone depending on how much heat is lost in a given area. Ref sheet with two kobolds, a female and a male, showing the effects of hot and cold branding in creating dramatic temporary tattoo designs on their bodies.
