My advice to EU leaders (who aren't far right): Offer help to the country concerned if it’s asked for, express sorrow for the deaths of people who are being manipulated into crossing borders illegally. Investigate and publish any co-ordination. Remove benefits to countries that weaponise migration.

“It’s not an intentional attack but it’s the unintended consequences. No one is looking at the cumulative effect, which has been as bad or worse than anything that’s happened in the US.” Britain seems incredibly careless with its inheritance, frittering it away, assuming it will continue forever.

AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.

A playbook repeated from Turkey to Norway to Belarus. Rather than recognising it Europe’s right took an opportunity to pile on to a centre-left leader they resent: domestic troubles aside, Sanchez has outperformed them on economic growth while seeing a green energy switch pay off

The wealthiest university on the planet, Harvard claims it needs to close a huge range of student services, including support for writing tutors and community service, to close a budget deficit while simultaneously planning to spend $10 million on hiring conservative professors. Give me a break.

I don't think I have a single conservator follower here, but whatever. Just remember that one of the perks of joining the BAPCR is that you're getting two issues of this pretty cool journal every year.

I think many "public intellectuals" stay on X because while they accept that radicalization is theoretically possible, it's something that only happens to other, dumber or weaker willed people... ... even as their every article inches closer to outright championing eugenics.

X owner Elon Musk indicates he would prioritise political violence (assassination of pro-migration politicians is the common sense meaning) over violence against "invaders" (refugees, asylum seekers, maybe ethnic minorities generally) while endorsing call for violence (killing) against both groups

Apologies if I sound angry, but it is a real problem that the 'smart' commentary on this war is trying hard to avoid the core lesson ("the president is a fucking moron") because it doesn't sound very clever when it is absolutely the most important takeaway from this debacle.

Yes, parties used to run social clubs. Because there was fuck all to do in the village on a Wednesday evening! It's not a replicable model for the same reason that the wire brush factory is not coming back to town: that economy doesn't exist anymore. You join the party because you want to do sth.

The Democratic Party should personally come to my house and enroll me in an activist social club or else I will never develop political consciousness.
