making games

But they are big things too. Giant things. A game is so much more than its physical index. They stretch deep across time and space, across peoples and cultures. These are hard things to see and appreciate when we think about games. I suppose it doesn't help that we are taught to outgrow play.

Trying a personal playtesting experiment of describing every choice I'm posed during a run grading em based on how fun* they felt. Hoping it'll clarify some design issues, but at the very least I can do it again in a month and see if there's less red when I cross my eyes. #gamedev

A render of a menger sponge with some platforms within it. Smooth min blends the shapes together.A render of a menger sponge with some platforms inside it. The absence of smooth min makes the platforms float awkwardly in the air.

Been reading Characteristics of Games. Biggest revelation has been how a long, enjoyable relationship with a game often comes from climbing a ladder of heuristics. It implies the need for a spectrum of beginner, intermediate, and advanced heuristics for the player to progress through.

Trying out some 3D composition. A pyramidal megastructure on the horizon is revealed to be a cube balanced on its smallest point as you approach. A cube viewed orthographically from this angle is also a hexagon, which resonates nicely with some of the divine geometry themes in KOROMEKE #gamedev
