still tippin after all these years

Frankly, I want to divest SCOTUS of jurisdiction to enter *any* orders reversing a lower court without a complete elaboration of the reasons why. They are the least busy judges in America with a self-selected workload. If they can't bother to explain it, they should not do it.

There unfortunately isn't a way to organize a society that is immune to somebody seizing control by violence. There is no simple answer to precisely when a democracy must defend itself from antidemocratic fascism, but every democracy will someday defend its ideals with blood else it will perish.

So "liberal democracy" can't win the political argument against fascism and has to resort to violence, is that what you're saying? If that's the case, it strikes me that, perhaps, liberal democracy isn't such a good way to organise society?

there are about 120,000 polling places and ΒΎ of states have some form of mail-in voting. there are about 22,000 immigration enforcement agents total. ICE can indeed terrorize a medium-sized city and harass others, but this fear-mongering about elections is innumerate nonsense.

This giant ICE Army they are building this year is also likely to be at polling places during the midterms in heavily Democratic precincts with the excuse being that they are looking for β€œillegals trying to vote.”

I wrote book reviews for a while for the WSJ well over a decade ago, and Bari Weis was my editor. One of her special tricks was to try to insert a sharp rightward slant into my essays *after* it had been copy edited, as a way of slipping her viewpoint in at the last minute.

I think, every so often, about how the student protesters in South Korea figured out there was a finite supply of tear gas, and then staged retreating marches that caused police to burn off most of it, before the big "bring your auntie and kids" marches that ultimately toppled the dictatorship.
