Excited for how everyone talking about $20 burritos will handle a New Mexico presidential primary / excited for every burrito place in NM to quadruple burrito prices in January 2028.

The co-founder of the 2024 National Uncommitted Movement, Abbas Alawieh, decisively won his primary to become a State Senator in Michigan. Abbas was endorsed by both Bernie Sanders and Gretchen Whitmer. Abbas Alawieh also privately met with former VP Kamala Harris last month upon her request.

Win by ~1%. Third candidate: 4%. A classic plurality-voting pathology: small splinter groups can be decisive. Every primary should use a consensus-building procedure like approval voting or ranked choice.

This is such an great feature (Rebecca is great!), and I've been thinking about it for a few days. IMO, "Influencer" in the ten-years-ago sense was really a LOT of jobs (spokesmodel/copywriter/etc.) but now it's morphing, at least in part, into "intentionally annoying person" which feels worse.

I see the now-conventional wisdom being trotted out in response to this comment, and I must respond. 1) A nuclear weapons program is enormously expensive. 2) The overwhelming majority of nations have signed the NPT. The political consequences of withdrawal are enormous.

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty made an enormous difference. It entered into force in 1970. President John F. Kennedy thought we might have 25-30 nuclear weapons states by the 1980s. We now have 9.

In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

the median midwestern voter loves two things: electing republicans and thwarting republican policy goals via ballot referendum

they're also right to make all the candidates stand on stage together on live TV when they announce the winner, but that's just bc it's funny

it's only possible bc their constituency populations are so strong but i genuinely think the UK does it right by not announcing any results until they've counted everything
