Wrote a short piece arguing that higher ed must help steer AI. TLDR: If we outsource this to tech, we outsource our whole business. But rejectionism is basically stalling. If we want to survive, schools themselves must proactively shape AI for education & research. [1/6, unpaywalled at 5/6] +

Loved debating whether ecologists should fly across the world to the big conferences where the powerful meet? You'll love: Can we use LLMs to critique LLMs at scale?

I see academics disclosing their use of generative AI in their papers. They may do it willingly or just as a requirement in the publication process, I don't know. I can see why you would want to know that, but it still strikes me as odd.
We are very happy to introduce AfriMTEB to #MTEB 🌍 If you are looking to evaluate an embedding model for African languages, you can now do so directly with MTEB! Big thanks for Kosei Uemura and @dadelani.bsky.social for the PR! #retrieval, #evaluation, #nlp
I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?

This is excellent, one of my favorite long-form pieces on agentic engineering - includes several non-obvious ways in which leaning on coding agents can catch you out
I just published a deep-dive into the 250-hour build behind syntaqlite, a SQLite formatter and LSP I built using AI agents. AI agents were the only reason built this after 8 years of wanting but there's a psychological toll to AI-assisted engineering. The post-mortem: lalitm.com/post/buildin...

Hey les Parisiens, I will be in Paris throughout February. I'm visiting the Institute for Advanced Study to work on AI-augmented mapping and notably within RAG systems for computational SSH, along with @akmunk.bsky.social. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/... Let's get in touch!
