I teach a whole lecture on economics attempting to use and reframe anthropology (wherein they use literal colonization). Mainly because of a current textbook that has been written "towards economics" and then, well, this. A reading list of old, colonial, anthropology a hundred years out of date.
I can think of a few different examples of mainstream economists colonizing the topics of other disciplines to "improve" their study and "make them more efficient" over the past century. Would be interested to read more history of disciplinary incursions/rebuff/battles for public attn...

Bet you didn't know that the Little Morton Salt Girl is an immortal being who existed before there was life on Earth.
As a Religious Studies professor, this directly targets my livelihood in a way that makes a mockery of any supposed profession of concern the administration has ever expressed for me as a Jewish person on campus.
President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
its such a bleak, violent, dark vision for the future. Of course, not restricted to the US or to Trump.

Things I and friends have done to calm an angry abusive man from further escalating and killing us or our children: -Smiled -Kept normal schedules in order not to trigger a fight -Appeased with kind acts (cooking, cleaning, favors) -Forced friendly tones and words
Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"
And this is why, in August of 2021, I had brain surgery to remove two metastatic tumors and then was in the classroom three weeks later when the new semester started. I wasn't even cleared to drive yet, much less teach.

Anyway back to my ongoing theory that women use AI to get more done and men use AI to get out of doing more.
I keep thinking about this gorgeous essay about how LLMs- so often trained by inheritors of colonial English- has now rendered the kind of language that is natural to us (“fancy” vocabulary, passive voice, reduced relative clauses) artificial and suspect. marcusolang.substack.com/p/im-kenyan-...

A Nigerian born author, Jerry Falade, had his $2.4M book deal pulled because he was accused of using AI. There is unavoidable optics of a Black man writing a brilliant novel that people assume must have been written by AI. However the broader issue is we can’t trust any writing isn’t AI generated.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
If you have an academic in your life, please be gentle with them this weekend because they're probably freaking the fuck out.
Because the 1st is a Saturday, “How is it August already?!” will be observed today, Friday, July 31, 2026. Please panic accordingly.
Me: "Hey, Goblin. You want some brine shrimp?" Goblin (my green betta): "YUSSSS!!!!!!" (In other news, this idiot jumped out of his tank today. Thankfully, I found him right after and he's fine. Back in the water but not smarter.)
yes, actually I do think AI-use/adoption is a fundamental declaration of what you value and what you don't and its really silly to believe that such declarations won't be noticed by those around you
“…the same mechanisms that drive people to grow wary of — and hostile toward — friends, co-workers and family members with different political beliefs are beginning to shape attitudes toward AI.”

Quick, everyone! A woman made a well-reasoned critique on the internet! (Sarcasm)
Oh did a female academic with an extensive history of study and practice in a particular area of literature make a reasoned critique of a male filmmaker’s movie? I’m sure this will be handled with maximum normality.
