Hirst has not a single thought in his head that didn’t first belong to somebody else. A cack-handed maker of xeroxes of finer works given colossal depth by artists who have unburdened themselves in the torturous process of creation, only to have the essence misinterpreted, stolen by a charlatan.
The cynic in me says that these films are cooked without the consistent hand- for good or ill- of the Broccoli family. It’ll go the way of Star Wars eventually; sucked dry and dragged down by an overbearing short-termist studio The optimist allows latitude for Villeneuve, but what happens after him?

Francis Bacon and the Masters, 2015. A landmark show where Bacon was exhibited alongside those he revered- Rembrandt’s Portrait of an Old Man, Matisse’s Nymph and Satyr and Picasso’s A Young Lady. Critics were not kind, but it remains a fascinating document of how greatness leaks through the ages.
Two songs vie for the title of greatest ever written, for me. Last Christmas by Wham!’s melancholic lyric and killer bass line is possibly George’s finest hour. You Keep Me Hangin’ On by The Supremes was Holland/Dozier/Holland at their apex. Gets in, gets out, job done. Perfection.
Slightly vexed that after a US release in June, there’s still no UK release date for the Warner Archive edition of the long suppressed Letty Lynton. Do I have to import this too? Come on @warnerbrospictures.bsky.social

Finally got my hands on one of my white whales. Thrilled.
I haven’t seen this since Universal released their classic horror series in beautiful red and black matte card slipcases in 2017 and I bought them all again. It’s wonderful. A smart transfer and a reminder that dvds still bring the milkshake to the yard, particularly with older films like this

Artistic practice does not have to be elevated to the philosophical to have merit. Sometimes a fuck is just a fuck, not love, and sometimes a square is just a square. The act of painting in itself has a level of profundity that need not be explained, or cannot. It just is. And it’s sorcery.

The National Glass Centre in Sunderland closed today, ending 1400 years of glassmaking on Wearside. As well as sadness that a precious cultural jewel has shuttered, there’s fury that a building less than thirty years old was allowed to fall into staggering disrepair to benefit a land sale. Corrupt.

Congratulations to La-La Land Records for getting this out. Michel Legrand is the best composer besides John Barry to do a 007 score and I’d have bet on it being great. Well, surprisingly, like the film, somehow it didn’t fly high. Nevertheless, it is 007, it is Legrand, it is important. Well done!
My first studio was a grubby room with crumbling plaster, next door to a painfully tuneless music teacher. There were rats. I became an artist in that room over long hours. I then moved into an old bookshop- a tiny room on the top floor where I stayed for three years. Now, a business park. Why not?
