🚨 Monday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the *lowest* on record (JAXA data) • about 350,000 km² below the 2010s mean • about 1,010,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,590,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 2,150,000 km² below the 1980s mean More: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between May and August by looking at the decadal average line positions.

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

We’re saddened by the Birch Glacier collapse and grateful for the scientists and authorities whose early warnings saved lives. But this is more than local — it’s a global warning. 🔔 Glaciers are nearing collapse. Leaders must act now. tinyurl.com/3zxd7ny7 #ActOnClimate #GlacierCollapse #Blatten

Why Spring Is Critical for Harp Seal Pups ❄️ Harp seal pups are weaned just 10-12 days after birth. By spring, they must adapt fast as sea ice melts. As the Arctic warms, ice breaks up earlier, threatening pup survival and disrupting the marine food web. 🔗 Learn more: tinyurl.com/yfw63d7c

Finally on my way home from Lord Howe Island (albeit slightly delayed). It was a pretty difficult year. Lots of birds with lots of plastic - more than I think we've ever seen. We keep saying "SURELY it can't get much worse" and then somehow it does.

For decades, this iconic graph has provided clear observational evidence of one of the key indicators of global climate change - Arctic sea ice loss. It’s from the NSIDC "Sea Ice Index" Now, support of this crucial data is at risk. A visual lens to our changing poles (zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...).

Blue line graph time series of Arctic sea ice extent for every September from 1979 to 2024. There is a long-term decreasing trend and large interannual variability.

This is horrible. I don't even know what to say. Some of our most key polar data. "As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported." nsidc.org/data/user-re...

Effective May 5, 2025, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS). As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported. This includes Sea Ice Index, Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) Data Products, Glacier Photograph Collection, U.S. National Ice Center Arctic Sea Ice Charts and Climatologies in Gridded Format Gridded Monthly Sea Ice Extent and Concentration, 1850 Onward World Glacier Inventory. If you rely on these products in your work, research, education, or planning, we invite you to share your story at nsidc@nsidc.org.
