A photo that answers some questions but begs others. The grave markers match lair records but what looks like a very recent burial in lair 90 can’t be the person I think is buried there as his name is already on the stone on lair 89. Does lair 88 look used? #AllSaints #FamilyHistory
This Halloween, forget vampires, zombies, ghouls, and ghosts. There's something far more terrifying lurking in the shadows: an online family tree with 110,000 people and zero sources. #genealogy

While looking for quotes about workhouses I came across this from former Thatcherite politician Edwina Currie: “I won't claim the workhouses didn't have their problems, but they were set up by people who cared.” Let’s compare and contrast that with the words of the people who actually set them up…
"Into such a house none will enter voluntarily; work, confinement, and discipline, will deter the indolent and vicious..." Chilling words taken from the 1832 Royal Commission into the operation of the Poor Laws which ushered in the Victorian Workhouse. 1/2

Tales of True Crime, Orkney : Reckless Driving
On 19 May 1899, John Thomas Walter of Finstown appeared in Kirkwall Sheriff Court before Sheriff Cosens, charged with reckless driving. This was before the first motor cars had appeared in Orkney. People still made their way about by foot, horse driven contraptions, and bicycle - a mode of transport which had become very popular. As is the case with today, larger horse drawn, faster vehicles, shared the road with the increasing number, but slower bicycles.

Pelargonium citrosum 'Citronella,' no longer blooming but still gives off a strong citrus/lemon scent,. Finally found a shrub that deer won't eat. I plan to put a lot more of these in the south patio garden next year. I'll probably take cuttings from this plant and overwinter them in the greenhouse.
The Banff-registered fishing boat, Progress II, on the Rose Street Foundry's Thornbush Slipway at #Inverness. She was launched in 1907 but the slipway didn't open until 1908 so she's likely in for a refit or undergoing modification prior to being used as a patrol boat during #WWII [HLH Archives]

Laboriously trawling 1841 Census for #NorthWallsAndBrims #Orkney intrigued by Army Pensioner Alexander Grant at Rysa. Said to be born “in the county”. Given that he married and had some children in Kildonan, #Sutherland probably not so. I foresee a rabbit warren opening…
I did ignore but have re-found and opted out.
eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.
The media goes on about the FM going against bus firms by announcing total public control & calling @johnswinney.bsky.social a Dictator, well they had better take a look at what's happening in Wales where it was reported widely in the media & news outlets without the hoohaa we have here in Scotland.
My #AATP26 talk on the #Sudbourne school log books is released this Friday at midday. If you like nostalgia & travelling back in time, this is the talk for you! #OnePlaceWednesday #LocalHistory #FamilyHistory
