Posting whatever takes my fancy

“every corner in a house, every angle in a room, every inch of secluded space in which we like to hide, or withdraw into ourselves, is a symbol of solitude for the imagination; that is to say, it is the germ of a room, or of a house.” The Brown Tea Pot, Gwen John, 1915-16 (YCBA)

A painting of a corner of a room, with stool, table, and part of a fireplace surround. A teapot and cups stand on the table, a book on the stool, a pot of brushes on the mantelpiece

Emily Carr (1871-1945) is possibly best known for her amazing paintings of trees. She spent her earlier years being disappointed by the art scene but a trip to Alaska in 1907 was a turning point, where she saw the Haida and Tlingit totem poles at Sitka, and wanted to document the artworks of what

Golfe Juan, 1927
Oil on canvas mounted on panel
Dufy first travelled to the South of France in 1908, when he visited L'Estaque with Braque. After the First World War, Dufy returned to the South, where he was deeply impressed by the Mediterranean light. He described it as leading 'naturally to that feeling of calm, to that classical serenity' that was so different from the light of the north. In the ig2os, he painted panoramic views glimpsed from windows; framed landscapes such as Golfe Juan are experiments with colour and light more than literal transcriptions of external reality.
