It's amazing how much time and money people can save when a government agency decides to consolidate two applications that go to two desks in the same building into one application that goes to both desks at once.

Gordon Pennycook@gordpennycook.bsky.social · 5mo agoYou know that finding that disfluent fonts trigger analytic thinking (Alter et al. 2007)? We've known that it doesn't replicate more than 10 years. In fact, the original effect was driven by weirdly low accuracy for 1 problem IN THE CONTROL CONDITION. Wild that this paper is cited so often.
Nature meta-research project puts claims in social-science paper to the test. Refs in last post I'm interested in Econ and Psych so I focused on that: Econ had about the same rate of "not reproducible" analyses as Psych and a worse rate then Political Science.
It's hard to look at things like this and not see a country headed toward some form of collapse.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

LLMs seem like the human experience of reading aloud when it is going extremely well, as if, to the listener, you could look away from the book and continue reading all the same. Musicians call this "reading ahead". It is predicting the next letter, word, tone, mood from what came before.

Shengwu Li@shengwuli.bsky.social · last yr.Another surprise: Reading instructions aloud makes a big difference to both comprehension and behavior. The replicators run a treatment in which instructions are not read aloud by the experimenter. Comprehension errors rise by 41 pp, from 7% to 49%!

Oprea 2024 reported an online lab experiment, and found that prospect theory anomalies occur not only for lotteries, but also for deterministic 'mirrors'.

When I was in grad school in the 90's the rule of thumb from twin studies was that the heritability of everything was ~50%. It turns out that twin studies are highly confounded, & after unconfounding w/ new genome-based methods (Family-GWAS), the median heritability of behavioral phenotypes is ~5% 🧪
