Perfect example this year, where D.C. United is on course for an 11/18 wild card match that would put them one win away from possibly being away the same night as the NWSL Championship. If they were like 6-7 points better this season, a final at Audi would be a major ops ordeal at best.
Over the last few years one of the pertinent questions for possible NWSL championship hosts who share facilities is "is their MLS team any good?" and if the answer was yes that makes it REALLY hard to host championship there
I asked about any updates on policy regarding the inclusion of trans athletes. "Our policy is our practice" is the answer I received. That has been the standard answer for a while. Any changes would have to be in consultation with the NWSLPA.
NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman confirms a second league division is still actively under consideration, but they have no update on timeline/structure.
Premier League Season Previews are back, covering all 20 clubs, out August 17. Last year, we called Cherki's £34m City move "a bit of a heist" and said Reijnders' £50m fee wasn't worth it. Cherki had one of the league's best creative seasons; Reijnders didn't back his fee. We got both calls right.
📰Gotham FC has loaned forward Mak Whitham to USL DC Power FC through the end of the 2026. Whitham, 16, is the youngest player to appear in a #NWSL regular season match. She remains under contract with Gotham through 2028. 1/
Really good nuts-and-bolts info here, including preseason start dates that really hammer home how tricky next season is going to be for the entire NWSL
The #NWSL plans to kick off its 2027 season on Feb. 11 in LA, 3 days before the Super Bowl across town. It's the earliest NWSL start ever, necessary due to ~7 weeks off for the World Cup. More on NWSL realities of February, World Cup...and scheduling as MLS flips its calendar:

WNBA (the org) courted this. They could have nipped this in the bud, but instead they placated anti-trans activists, so now bigots have glomed onto them. If you don't tell them their opinions are vile and are unwelcome, they will destroy you or leech on you forever. just ask amnesty international
riley gaines is at the minnesota lynx vs indiana fever game posing with people courtside as they line up for photos
Stopped for dinner on my way home & had to explain this one to some folks
GK assist. GK assist. GK assist.
Left Audi with Utah-Portland at 1-1 and see Something Has Happened since
A 3-game winning streak came to a halt for the Spirit, who suffered through some imprecision in a 1-0 loss to a savvy San Diego Wave side. Your Green Line Soccer gamer came out a few minutes ago but this is my first chance to share it
Washington Spirit can't solve San Diego Wave in 1-0 loss
The Wave held the Spirit at bay for long periods, ending a three-game Washington winning streak.

So proud of our community! We hit a total of 98 backpacks between in person donations and orders from our wishlist 🙌🏾 and plenty of supplies. Sousa requested 203 backpacks and I think we can hit it.
Rain or shine, we are here at Gate A ready to collect your supplies!
Adrián González says the Spirit "can take also a lot of positive things, even [with the loss]," but adds that he sees "the next step" for the team being how patient they can be in the final third.

Not sure I can recall seeing a player draw 2 yellow cards in one run, but Tamara Bolt just did it. Dali & Morroni booked for fouls to bring her down as the Spirit push for a last-second goal
Wave leaning on every game-slowing trick in the book at the moment, and tbh I'm a little confused by it. They've been managing the game rather comfortably if we're being honest, not sure there was much Spirit momentum to bust up. Then again, Spirit at Audi, there's always something in stoppage time
I think it's been fair to say over the last 4 games, this is showing not so much in fatigue as it is in lack of time to use training sessions to refine and adjust their approach. It's recovery, one session, and gameday over and over
The Washington Spirit since July 3 (30 days) W vs. Houston W vs. NC L vs. Gotham W vs. Boston W vs. Denver W vs. Utah ? vs. San Diego That's a whopping 7 (!) games in that stretch, AKA a game every ~4.3 days on average
Spirit calling Sullivan and Martínez to the bench for what would be the game's first substitutions...except now I see the Wave prepping Trinity Byars as well
Rain here got much worse right before halftime ended for about a minute, and has suddenly slacked off to more of a minor shower. No subs for either side as we kick off.
If you see @spiritsquadron.bsky.social capos @rpn10.bsky.social & @meredithbartley.bsky.social in these shirts but maybe you can't scan the QR code, they're supporting Alex's battle against leukemia. If you have the means, support of this gofundme would be hugely appreciated
Hi Spirit fam - one of our own has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. If you are able, please donate to his go fund me to support him and his partner. gofund.me/e968fa317
Sudden uptick in chippiness in the last 90 seconds. Barcenas booked for a clumsy collision with Wiesner, Santos frustrated to not get a call from the resulting dead ball.
The showers are officially a downpour. You could hear it get louder before it was even obviously raining.
Just before players emerge at Audi Field, we have fairly substantial rain. Not as bad as the Louisville-Chicago biblical storm, but it's not nothing either.
San Diego CBs have Paños take a seat in the 3rd minute so van Zanten can come have something addressed with her eye and not leave the pitch. Spirit bench very aware of this end-around to avoid being down to 10, and they're not too happy.

Every Evander highlight has a whiff of him saying "lol" right before doing whatever astounding thing it is he's doing
Holy f***ing sh**, Evander I've never seen a player do incredible things as nonchalantly as this dude FC Cincy rally from 2-1 down to 3-2 up in a flash; their Brazilian 10 involved in all 3 goals
