There have been significant financial differences between the two parties with, as The Athletic reported at the start of the year, Vinicius Jr looking for an annual package in the region of €30million, including a base salary, performance-related add-ons and a renewal bonus — with the latter element the key sticking point in negotiations. Madrid were previously unwilling to meet those demands but sources with knowledge of Wednesday’s discussions, granted anonymity to protect relationships, indicate the club have now raised their offer to a level that reflects Vinicius Jr’s importance to them and the project. The player will now have to decide whether he wants to renew with the club he joined in 2018, await free agency next summer or pursue the opportunity presented by Arsenal.

A thought I've had is that a struggling rust belt city should go all in on becoming this. "America isn't Amsterdam" is true but in a rich country of 350m people, if you become the ONE city that is Like This, you will attract 100,000 people who love this shit.

Bike parking isn't allowed on the surrounding streets or squares, creating more space for pedestrians.

Premier League Season Previews are back, covering all 20 clubs, out August 17. Last year, we called Cherki's £34m City move "a bit of a heist" and said Reijnders' £50m fee wasn't worth it. Cherki had one of the league's best creative seasons; Reijnders didn't back his fee. We got both calls right.

The Premier League preview I'm most looking forward to reading the draft of next week is Cat's on Hull City, because they're the weakest team to get promoted in the era of modern stats and I'm fascinated to see how they're going to handle that.

You can see the very obvious throughline from “men could transition and easily dominate women’s sports” to “women’s sports are lesser and shouldn’t be taken seriously” to “women shouldn’t play sports” to “here are the acceptable life choices for women”

If anyone can get 100 with a back 3 in MLS, send it to me. It took me forever to get a back 3 one in EPL, and almost as long to get any win in MLS. The MLS back 3 team seems very difficult.
