Had the great privilege to serve as External Examiner for a PhD today. It really is one of the most rewarding experiences getting to spend time with another's work, asking them to think through their arguments, evidence, and analysis, and to come out the other side with an advanced degree.

A small, random factoid I've just stumbled upon: Daniel O'Connell's most trusted lieutenant, T.M. Ray, had a son named Daniel O'Connell Ray who attended Queen's Galway and went off to India as a Surgeon. Another data point in the respectability/desirability of empire for middle class Irish.

I'm never going to be a big GAA person because I didn't grow up with it. But, there is something so pure and moving in the pure unadulterated joy of this team and these fans. The amateur nature of GAA reinforces just how special sport can be for individuals and communities.

Again, what right wing Republicans and Democrats call "socialism" is the sort of regulated capitalism that was consensus for much of the 20th century. They pretend it's anti-market when really it's only anti-oligarchy
