You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Little girl on the train: Uncle Mallory died. Her mum: Yes. Little girl: So he won't feel anything now. Her mum: No. Little girl: Which is good because the insects will be eating his eyes.

it was SO busy today (because Canada had a long weekend stat holiday yesterday) and this guy came over to the consultation window like "quick question" and I was like "yeah what's up" and he said "what vaccines do I need for my trip to Malawi"

why do I often put scare quotes around "vulnerable" and "at risk"? because people are *made* vulnerable, and people are *put at-risk"—these are not stable categories. we all live in a state of risk, some more than others, and risk is not distributed evenly. we can all be made vulnerable.

Theory: The context collapse of the 21st century means many people read or consume media through a deeply personalised lens - everything is either about or for them specifically, so critical writing is experienced as confrontation

before we moved to Canada 20+ years ago, there were times we couldn't afford health insurance and just went without, I had to quit karate because we couldn't afford me getting injured without health insurance, etc. etc. it is a tremendous relief to live here, and an important form of freedom.

Oh, did anyone do the part yet where this is a big part of why more people don't quit their jobs at terrible places like Lockheed Martin, or take more risky actions in protest of the administration's bullshit moves, because your health insurance is tied to your job and no job, no health insurance?

Two people are walking down the street when they see a billboard that says "The AI singularity is on the horizon!" One turns to the other and asks, what's a horizon? The other one answers: it's an imaginary line that moves away as quickly as you can approach it.

yeah like to me the difference between, say, Dave Chappelle vs JK Rowling is Chappelle is mean to trans people and then he goes and spends his money on cars or watches or whatever his personal rich person thing is, whereas JK Rowling spends her money on anti-trans legal cases and activists

just said this on another post but it bears repeating: the thing about continuing to give money to any jk rowling properties or the nyt is not that they’re shitty about trans people, which they are. it is that both of these entities MATERIALLY CONTRIBUTE to the legal challenges to trans rights

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

I love the IDSA. So many orgs trying to be "apolitical" which usually means screwing over minority populations and they're out here like "we decided right now was the ideal time for an Anthony Fauci Courage in Leadership Award" ❤️❤️❤️

ID physician Anthony Fauci, MD, FIDSA has led with courage, scientific integrity and an unwavering commitment to improving public health. These qualities inspired IDSA to establish the Anthony Fauci Courage in Leadership Award. We thank him for his service to patients, science & the ID community.
