Greatest satirist since Jonathan Swift… …a phrase bandied about this week… Swift wrote astonishing prose laced with complex irony. He kicked up not down… That’s not the same as spewing alternately vaporous & feculent drivel, seasoned with some vicious dreams, at society’s most vulnerable people…
Happy sixtieth birthday to my old friend Revolver. So many great tunes from which to choose. Here's the one that everybody thought was about a woman, but was really about pot. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r95-...

Another movie Netflix just added for no apparent reason: Spielberg's 1941. And yes, it's still as bad as its reputation. It's frenetic and unfocused, and loaded with incoherent slapstick and wasted comedic talent. Yet it's the kind of bad movie that could be made only by a great director... 1/
Bye Bye Birdie is now on Netflix, for some reason. I'd never seen the movie adaptation before, although I once played Ed Sullivan's voice, the train conductor, and general chorus roles in a high-school production. (Before some of you were even BORN.) The story is changed in some odd ways. 1/
Seeing the new Spider-Man: Homey Homey Home Home in a couple of hours. I most look forward to the bit in which Spider-Man gets chased by a giant cat for literally four straight minutes. youtu.be/kUL6uNT2vdI?...

People who deny climate change should be jailed. We have had fires here in the Var for ten days now. 35 houses lost in our village alone. Denial is the worst possible response.
Now it can be told: My Twisted Poets gig in Vancouver will be sponsored by the Writers' Union of Canada.
Hey folks. Know anybody in Vancouver? Because I'm going to be there in mid-September. Doing two events: First, on September 16, I'm going to perform a set at Twisted Poets, which is put on by Pandora's Collective (pandorascollective.com/pandoras-eve...). Britannia Library, 6:00 p.m. 1/
Ingmar Bergman overcame his fear of animals when Liv Ullmann brought her dachshund, Pet to live with them. Bergman called him “emotion on four legs” & Pet was his companion as he wrote CRIES AND WHISPERS. When Ullmann left the relationship, she left Pet with him. #IngmarBergMonth

Okay, I saw the thing today. It was good. It was loud and humourless and thoroughly Nolan. Enjoyed it, but no urge to see it a second time. Some of the first half reminded me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, actually -- e.g. the "Run Away!" scenes, or the Cave of Caerbannog monster...
An exclusive sneak preview of the new Odyssey movie:
The Mitch McConnell business reminds me that when Dorothy Parker was notified that President Calvin Coolidge was dead she said: "How can they tell?"
AOC on Mitch McConnell's absence.
Christopher Columbus! Stamp my card. I just watched the 1940s film adaptation of Little Women. (It's okay, not great.) This means I've now seen all four sound versions, which entitles me to a free cappuccino. And I read the book once too, which means I also get a free sandwich.
Final trailer for ‘COYOTE VS. ACME’ has been released. In theaters August 28. #CoyoteVsAcme

The Fly (Cronenberg remake) was really good, but I don't ever want to see the inside-out-monkey bit again.
Calling all scaredy cats! Is there a scene or horror film you refuse to watch?? 🙀
I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”
This is Alfie. He is a professional opera singer with some of the best vibrato in the industry. Some have even called him the next Paw-varotti. 13/10 (TT: thelifeofalfiee)
Without saying your age, what is your favourite movie released the year you turned 18? (Took me a thirty-years-late rewatch to realize how good it was, but I'll go with...)

This is Bruno and Rocket. Rocket insists on making a grand entrance. Bruno is happy to help with that. 13/10 for both (IG: bruno_da_doxie_doggie)
Everybody's talking about the sportsball, so... Go Broncos! Here's my contribution.
I would've thought the answer was obvious... (The Shining is great too)

If Jesus can be portrayed as white then Helen of Troy can be portrayed as black.
Margaret Laurence was born one hundred years ago today. Which means Hagar Shipley would be a hundred and fifty-two now. And still proud. (I visited Neepawa, Manitoba -- the real-life Manawaka -- back in 1998. Including her childhood home and her grave.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margare...

Thou shalt not mock others appearance when you always look like one of the melting Nazis from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Miller: "It's not a coincidence that when you look at these violent Antifa demonstrations not one of the people that is demonstrating looks like a normal person. Not one looks normal. They're all deformed in some way in their appearance, in their dress, in their mannerism." #cdnpoli
