Two of our science managers were busy last week answering questions from almost 400 students in I'm a Scientist chats for British Science Week, from year 4s curious about the 3Rs to year 11s asking how we can replace animals in research. Here's an example of how we explain 3Rs to school students 👇

A school student asks 'Could you explain your work in a simpler term? I want to learn more about your work'. An NC3Rs staff member replies 'Of course! Thank you for asking! I work for the NC3Rs, which is an organisation set up to help scientists replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in research. Replacing animals looks to find alternatives, such as using human cells or computational models. Reducing animals means making sure only the necessary number are used by designing experiments well. And refinement means making sure animal welfare is as high standard as possible. And this includes things like how they are housed and handled.'

Last week was our busiest British Science Week yet! 250 classes from 82 different schools connected with 265 scientists. It's fair to say there were plenty of conversations taking place 🌟 Take a look at our report, highlighting some of the stand-out moments: imascientist.org.uk/2025/03/bsw25/

Preuss’s monkeys (Allochrocebus preussi) are native to Cameroon, Nigeria, and Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. Distribution is restricted to 8 population segments. They live in groups of 9-12 individuals. Threatened by habitat fragmentation and hunting. Endangered. Photo courtesy of Brent Huffman.

Chronic fatigue/idiopathic hypersomnia is such a lonely diagnosis, especially in academia. Currently trying to explain to a colleague why I didn’t respond to their time-sensitive email sooner (I was asleep for 21 hours straight) and there just…aren’t the right words.

My rescued ball python was raised in very dry conditions and has always struggled with his sheds. Recently purchased a “humidity hide” to see if it would help, and look what he left me this morning! Go Fenrir! 🐍 #snakes

Adopted two lil rattys over the weekend. Meet Rufus and Remy! Made the poor decision (for my productivity) to install a pet cam outside their cage and I’ve been watching them check out their new space for *checks watch* 3 hours straight 🐀 enrichment for everybody!

Back from a lovely trip home to Virginia! But I’ve learned my lesson NOT to respond “just some books!” when someone asks what you’d like for Christmas. How it started (the first unwrapped book) versus how it ended (16 books and an extra checked bag later…) 🫠

I’m very sad to hear that Colin Renfrew, a giant in the field of Prehistoric Archaeology, has joined the realm of the ancients. An academic archaeologist with one foot firmly in the trench, he combined theory & fieldwork with flair - and had a knack for asking the right questions. His work lives on

So many new followers! Hello! So excited to see a growing academic community in this space. I study primates in both captive and wild environments. For my dissertation, I’m studying landscape genetics in three sympatric primate species at the Área de Conservación Guanacaste in Costa Rica.
