Mad philosopher, doting dog parent, techno-fantasy author. she/they. Personal website: https://www.sofiajeppsson.com/ Debut novel Kugghjulssjälar is doing great in Swedish - currently searching for a new home for the English version.

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

AI labs buy, scan, shred millions of rare books

If you have retreated to physical books because the internet is too full of AI slop, bad news — now they’re shredding the books to feed their AI slop machines.

Okay take this FWIW bc I'm tired and associating wildly: Youtuber zoologist Lindsay Nikole says psilocybin evolved 50-60 million years ago; possibly to poison bugs that otherwise eat those mushrooms. So, like in the Naked Lunch where people get a "Kafkaesque" high from snorting insecticides?

My nephew challenged me to a game of chess. He's recently played in a big children's tournament. I hadn't played any chess for years. Tried to just follow my intuition, like captain Kirk in TOS. Guess what? STAR TREK LIED TO US ABOUT CHESS. Rational thinking wins every day of the week. (1/2)

Today is Spock's fourth birthday, so we spoiled him by going to the beach to play in the sea. It's cloudy and 16 C so not a weather that makes you WANT to do that, but anything for our birthday boy.

Me and Spock running through the sea. Spock is a black German Spitz. I'm middle-aged, short-haired, skinny and pale, dressed in t-shirt and shorts. It's cloudy.

Alexander nearly ran over a hedgehog with the lawnmower: She was lying flat on her stomach, completely still, one hind leg stretched out behind her. I Ducked for wild animal rehabs, what to do. Then she woke up, pulled her leg back in, and waddled into the bushes. Wonder what had happened. (1/2)

We watched Maggie Gyllenhaal's "the Bride!" It begins with Mary Shelley's ghost, or, like, she's undead in her grave or something, and she wants to write a sequel, and it's gonna be much cooler than the OG book! Then, she does a supervillain laugh. (1/5)

Back from a roadtrip further up north: Luleå, Boden, Jokkmokk, Arvidsjaur, Storuman, Lycksele, home again. Pretty towns, beautiful nature and scenery. And every teeny-tiny village sports fast chargers for electric vehicles. Driving an EV up here couldn't be any easier.

Picture of Alexander and our three dogs standing by the edge of a cliff, looking over a lake far below. Alexander is a tall slim man dressed in light, loose clothes, wearing sunglasses and a hat with a face veil for mosquito protection. The dogs are Laban, a white Bichon Havanaise with his fur cut short, looking in the direction of the camera. Kirk, a yellow Tibetan Spaniel, lying down and looking away. Spock, a black German Spitz, looking towards the distance.

Neighbour: "You know you're in my yard? Cutting into my tree? Me: "No ... This tree is in MY yard, but its branches go in your driveway, now I'm finally doing something about it! Neighbour shows where the border actually is. Me: 😶 Neighbour: 🤷"You're already at it, might as well finish the job!"

Teachers complain that kids use AI to pass their exams, but this is nothing new. Philip K Dick said an AI helped him pass the necessary exam to get into college. However, since it was the 1940s, the AI was a voice that only he could hear, not a smartphone app. Even AI-cheating was harder back then.

Reading about Philip K Dick getting a Rorschach test in therapy; made me remember when my psychologist gave me one in 1997 or thereabouts (she was a Rorschach specialist). My result was "very serious" (she didn't say more than that). Out of curiousity, #philpsy - is Rorschach still a thing?

I watched Project Hail Mary, thinking it would be an entertaining space adventure - but it was BAD. My two biggest issues: 1. It's the (very) near future, but they built a super-duper-spaceship that goes at near-light speeds (as long as it gets sufficiently high-energy fuel) just like that. (1/2)

Reading PKD's VALIS. A guy calls the MC and asks "where are you?" Me: Normal question when calling. MC: What a bizarre question - I'm obvs at home, by the phone I just picked up! Me: Right, it's the seventies! I'm old enough to remember the beforetimes, but it's been SO LONG with cellphones.

Alexander and I bumped into two drunks late last night. One was mostly quiet and seemed embarrassed, but the other one insisted on talking to us. He was like "hey ... Hey. I really must tell you: I tolerate you! You should live your lives as you please, be yourselves!" We: ?? uh thanks ??? (1/4)

Latest in "completely unnecessary gen-AI": I pick up a train ticket on my job computer. An "AI assistant" I never asked for goes "This looks like a long document, should I explain it to you?" Very useful for people capable of understanding gen-AI texts but incapable of recognizing train tickets.
