Many people outside the UK have been asking me who Rod Liddle was. Here's Stewart Lee (from 08:53 onwards) on the man described by Fraser Nelson (former editor of The Spectator) as 'the greatest satirist since Swift.' Let this be the last word on the subject. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFt3...

If I were going to go really out on a critical limb, I would say that Nolan interpreted Odysseus as the guilt-ridden creator of a giant spectacle that eventually leads to mass illiteracy because he (Nolan) is ambivalent about his status as an auteur of big tentpole pictures.
Haters focusing on Liddle's violence toward his pregnant partner, his galloping racism, or his repeated defences of paedophilia, should remember to mention he was also one of the worst writers to ever do it. A calorie-free hack of the first water. Just absolute dogshit, back to front.
I'd've hoped that Liddle could have been either silent, or kind, but he chose to be neither.
Sad to see people posting on social media negatively about Rod Liddle, who died yesterday. If I have disagreed with you very strongly in life - and you die - I hope I'll be either silent, or kind.
My favourite part of Emily Wilson's review of 'The Odyssey' is when she refers to Argos, 'whose adorableness as a puppy is predictably amped up to suit our animal-loving times'; the first time we — and Odysseus — see him, Eumaeus seems to be tossing his unwanted siblings over the edge of a cliff.
What a fantastically stupid thing to say.
Long covid is a disputed subject, at best.
so last night you saw Nick Cave sing 'Where the Wild Roses Grow' with Kylie Minogue, but nearly thirty years ago I saw him sing it with Blixa Bargeld, and they had a little kiss afterwards, so how d'you like them apples
Ukraine Foreign Affairs Minister: "We have detected intensive Russian propaganda campaign across Europe using pictures from Ceuta to sow destabilisation." Far-right from EU (& US!) falls with open eyes for hybrid threats from the weaponisation of migration, even fan the flames. #unity #solidarity
And isn't it ultimately from music like this that Deleuze and Guattari (via Bateson) developed their idea of the plateau?
I genuinely believe that when all the gongs come together at around 39 seconds it's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. David Toop told me it's like the creation of the world, and I think he was right.
It's August, which means we've just got another two weeks left of term…
We're getting a new mattress today, our old one recycled, and our bedrrom now looks like something bad's about to happen, or already has…
Agreed. @vittles.bsky.social is one of the best things to have happened in this country for years, and it makes living in London far more interesting.
The @vittles.bsky.social 451 Great Restaurants to Try in London - Google Map is a thing of beauty. I've spent the afternoon adding recommendations to my map so when in deepest Dalston or out in Hounslow I'll have somewhere new to try. Subscription needed for access - worth it for this alone.
It is good for the culture to have widely popular, capably made, aspirational middlebrow artworks.
for a few shining weeks, we have culture! lovers, haters, nerds, auteurs, popcorners, stunt guys all communing, summer action blockbuster meets humanist canon, art making ideas making more ideas, this is the middle ground
I was invited to a temple dedication in Bali about 15 years ago, one of only two non-Indonesians granted permission, with gamelan performances, Topeng mask dances, Kecak monkey chant, and it was probably one of the most amazing days of my life.

Thinking of Christine today, and Ross, their girls, and everyone who loved her (which seemed to be everyone). It was a blessing to have known her, and many a glass will be raised to her tonight.
Yesterday we lost one of our better ones, Christine Borland, an artist of rare touch and sensitivity, and one of the kindest, loveliest people you could ever wish to meet. This is how I'll remember her always, a smile on her face, her voice as soft as running water. My love to Ross and the girls. X
I know that everyone's become very interested in film criticism this past week, but there's little which can top this frame in a recent 'Drunken Bakers' strip. @vizcomic.bsky.social @barneyfarmer.bsky.social @leehealey.bsky.social

Sad to report that a new war has broken out on the Dudley-Wolverhampton border.

Anyone know how to revive a dragonfly I found on the surface of our pond? It’s drying out, and has a little sugar water.
We should be incredibly grateful to @regretteruane.bsky.social for sharing these wonderful works with us
Satyr created by Mary Lorraine, c.1967, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital, where she was compelled to live. One of several surviving works her paintings often depict scenes of ballet, art making & society occasions & it seems, pre-hospitalisation, she may have been a professional dancer
