Back from Valencia, where I got to see both the total eclipse and @bennettmckenna.bsky.social! We had a lovely time and the eclipse was absolutely astonishing. I feel so lucky I got to see it, and in such good company too. It was genuinely one of the most awe-inspiring things I’ve ever seen.
I am very excited to do a panel on this topic with Natasha, whose books I've loved for years! This should be a great online convention if you're into queer SFF.
We are also thrilled to announce that @freyamarske.bsky.social will be joining @natashapulley.bsky.social for our panel on Magic and Queerness in Historical Settings, discussing her international bestselling Last Binding trilogy. Tickets available here: www.tickettailor.com/events/siren...
SHRIEKING about this. I love Freya’s books and A Power Unbound was genuinely so hot I had to put it down and pace several times while reading. If you haven’t got your ticket yet, go get it now!!

Reading Harrow the Ninth on holiday has me thinking things like “Hmm, I should ward the hotel door…” Lock, Jess. The word is “lock”.
I think it should be legal to break into a church if it’s locked but you know there’s medieval stonework inside, actually.
If you're based in the UK, be aware that the eligibility for a Disabled Persons Railcard is expanding in September, and you might now be able to get one even if you couldn't before. www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk/eligibility-...
Just made my own pesto! I bet most people don’t know that with just a little effort, a bunch of ingredients that cost more bought separately than together, and SO MUCH CLEANUP, you can make something only slightly worse than you would buy in a jar at the supermarket. And it’ll go off quicker, too 💖
I am SO excited for this. Siren Events have a great track record for fantastic panels and interviews—I got my ticket as soon as sales opened!
I am *so* excited to announce our next virtual event, Bookish & Queer: a celebration of queer sci-fi and fantasy, taking place on Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th of October 2026. Tickets are on sale now with a £10 early bird discount for all of July! www.siren-events.co.uk/bookish-queer #books #sff
Highly recommend this keynote speech from #Metropolcon I spent the following three days of the con asking people if they’d seen it and everyone agreed it was brilliant.

Listen, I just really think not enough sci-fi fans knows about ‘39 by Queen. We got space travel. We got time dilation. We got brave astronauts setting out in search of a new planet to save their civilisation. And it’s a banger. Tell your book club about ‘39 by Queen. m.youtube.com/watch?v=kE8k...

Off to day 3 of #metropolcon! It‘s been amazing. I especially loved @aiki-mira.bsky.social’s keynote on technofascism and the utopian European project, and the indie vs tradpub and queer writing panels. Looking forward to today’s workshop on translation and increasing the visibility of European SFF!
This is FANTASTIC. The rhythm, the alliteration! I don’t think I’ve ever read a translation that feels this lively. I very much think we should be translating old texts into colloquial speech—a lot of translators have too much respect for the text and not enough for the story.
Have you read Beowulf? No you haven't. And especially not like this. Well, you fucking should. Or anyway the fight between Beowulf and Grendel, which is short enough that you'd get through it. @sesquiotic.bsky.social brings it to you. stronglang.wordpress.com/2026/05/19/w...
My Zeide took one look at 2026 and decided it wasn’t for him, so this week has been a lot of travelling, funeral prep and attendance, and starting to sort through his things. I really appreciate this lovely tribute written by his friend Kate Thompson: katethompsonauthor.substack.com/p/farewell-h...
Farewell Henry. The last boy to board the Kindertransport.
It is with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of my friend Henry Glanz.

I have reached the point in writing a story about magical auditing and accountancy where I need to actually do some maths and I am not being brave about it at all.
