Writer, ice skater, gin drinker. She/her 🏳️‍🌈. THE LAST BINDING trilogy, SWORDCROSSED, CINDER HOUSE out now. BODIES OF MAGIC out September 2026.

I had to send a rather apologetic list of pronunciations to the audiobook production team, but me & my census data of French names from the 15th century ne regrettent rien!!

✨hauntedtoasters✨@hauntedtoasters.bsky.social · yesterday

I'm reading the Bodies of Magic ARC and 1. It is very good 2. @freyamarske.bsky.social decided to absolutely maximise the number of names that are really tricky to pronounce if you don't know French and honestly I kind of respect it.

also obsessed with this and, as someone who just spent almost all of a "free day to write in" doing necessary errands and life admin, EQUALLY obsessed with the amount of books I could potentially write if I had the luxury of not doing my own groceries & cooking

Tansy Gardam@tansyg.bsky.social · last wk.

obsessed with Ian Flemming's daily schedule - swim - brunch - write 1500 words no edits just freestyle - lobster hunting - pink gin - lunch - siesta - sit in garden - another swim - 500 more words - "a couple of powerful drinks" - dinner - scrabble with wife - sleep

hot tip: also works for deciding what your nom de plume's surname will be, when you have to make a snap decision after your first short story sale! (I didn't open a map so much as pester my genealogist mother for some good names of towns inhabited by Various Ancestors, but it worked regardless)

As a historical romance author, I simply open a map of England and zoom in to village level and lo, good names! Except for that time I landed in Stanton Lacy, thought it seemed familiar, and realised Georgette Heyer had used the same trick.

[puts up dramatic thumbnail that says BREAKING MY SILENCE] it's true I do know what I did 💜💜💜💜💜

this is a callout post for @freyamarske.bsky.social she knows what she did specifically: I finally finished the entire Last Binding trilogy and in the best possible way they made me want to fling myself into the sun funny and clever and suspenseful and heartbreaking and so so gloriously queer

it's 7:40am I have been awake since 5am (thanks, timezones) and don't have to leave for the convention for another hour and a half, AMA* (*don't ask me if I should be using the time to finish my draft, the answer is yes and also shut up)

this book made me scream with laughter & also made my brain feel like it was on fire in a fun way. NOBODY dicks around with language to such incredible effect as kai ashante wilson.

cover for the new book by kai Ashante Wilson, The Fall of Elvenesse

Just finished an absolutely incredible book (Nonesuch by Francis Spufford) which I did NOT know was not a standalone and the ending of which made me shriek in dismay. To Be Continued?? you fucker. NOW WHAT DO I DO WITH MYSELF.

Just listened to this banger of an episode and realised that a scene in Bodies of Magic combines an emotional-climax-rainstorm (including kissing in the rain) with an illegal underground fighting ring, which means I might as well have labelled it "SPECIAL GIFT FOR SARAH MACLEAN" 🤷‍♀️

We’re celebrating the paperback release of These Summer Storms this week, and that means we’re talking about rain and snow and wind and tempests and tornadoes and monsoons, and why we all like weather in books so much (hint, it’s because it’s dialed up to 11).

The first ⭐️ for Bodies of Magic, from Library Journal! The most personal and most ambitious book I've written, so it's a nerve-wracking joy to have it out there in the world.

My June reviews are up! I saw stars for August Clarke's THE FELICITY COMPLEX and @freyamarske.bsky.social's BODIES OF MAGIC. More stars for @tkingfisher.com, @mytholder.bsky.social, @lillianjaine.bsky.social, and @aptshadow.bsky.social. www.libraryjournal.com/section/revi...

I have just DNFd yet another debut novel that read like a first draft--often incoherently overwritten, inconsistent characters, agonising pacing. Great idea and obvious talent but in need of a brutal three-page dev letter they didn't get, so now the book will tank & the author will probably give up.

and no, none of what is going on right now leads to “better” shows - why? BECAUSE WRITERS/DIRECTORS/CREATIVES DON’T GET ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO GET BETTER AT THEIR CRAFT AND CAN’T EARN ENOUGH TO STAY IN IT FOR LONG ENOUGH TO GAIN MASTERY. (10/14)

I just received my PLR/ELR statement. PLR/ELR is a way that Australian writers can receive income from their books in libraries and schools. I remind writers to do your bloody paperwork so you can get paid and I remind readers if you borrow our books from libraries we still get paid.

This is a fantastic observation and I want to join ALL the discussions in comments but dayjob is calling so I'll just say: the weirder and more specific a sex scene is the more that book lingers in my mind, every time.

ICYMI, I wrote a little thing about how the crafting of sex scenes in genre romance has taken a major hit in recent years. #romancelandia romancing-the-stoned.beehiiv.com/p/no-f-ck-is...

Be great to see Worldcon over this side of the world *not* during a global pandemic which meant the in-person event didn't go ahead (which was what happened to Wellington in 2020). If you're in spec fic spaces, give Brisbane in 28 a follow; if you're a Worldcon site voter this year, vote Brisbane!
