I am starting to realize that when a lot of people accuse professors of not caring enough about their teaching, the problem may be that we are so saturated with service that the triaging we have to do to survive is such that we have to cut corners to just keep as many balls in the air as possible.

I am sorry for being that cranky person, but if you are in a GroupMe for your child’s level with all the parents of that said level, please do not post who your son’s teacher is, like all the other 200 parents. How is Canada so much better than France or Spain? The whole thing of reducing quality of life to a number without thinking about race, class and gender is absolutely preposterous. It tells you everything you need to know about economists in general, and Wharton ppl in particular.

I think this has been wonderful. My only concern has to do with how fields are understood and how people are hired. If North Americanists are now “vast early America”, does that mean that departments don’t need to hire Latin Americanists anymore because north Americanists can do it all?

Brushing up for a new class and it really is remarkable how much the Anglophone historiography of North America has been transformed by something as simple as “more people learning Spanish”
